Have you noticed some people that seem to eat and eat and eat but never seem to gain any weight? Maybe you have noticed that they are getting a bit flabby around the tummy area or perhaps their arms or thighs are getting slightly bigger.
But overall you would definitely classify them as slim. This seems truly unfair, especially if you are one of those people who seems to gain weight by just looking at a dessert.
However, these kind of people are actually known as skinny fat and the health implications for these people are just as serious as being obese or overweight.
Skinny fat can be more dangerous than being fat
Usually, when you visit a doctor and you look overweight it can be easy to diagnose your health problems and take precautionary measures such as losing weight.
If you are one of the skinny fat people, you may fall into the trap of thinking you are healthy and not do anything about it until it’s too late. Skinny fat people can be hiding as much visceral fat as an obese person which can be detrimental to their health.
Skinny fat have just as many health issues
If you are skinny fat, you need to watch out for your health. Doctors have mentioned that the fat deposits that these people carry are often hidden around their major organs.
These hidden fat are one of the main causes of heart conditions, diabetes, and insulin resistance. The fat you usually see on the skin are not as dangerous.
Skinny fat people have low body mass index (BMI)
Their weight on the scale seems perfectly normal as is their BMI. Nevertheless, these people actually have very little muscle as compared to a person who regularly does workouts.
Skinny fat people have a normal weight but inside they can be experiencing all the major health issues of an obese person who has a high BMI.
Skinny fat people have double the risk of dying from diabetes
Diabetes is one of the most feared diseases that can actually be prevented with a balanced diet and regular exercise. For a skinny fat person, being diagnosed with diabetes means that you are twice as likely to die compared to an overweight person who also has diabetes.
Maybe it’s because of the extra muscle an overweight person has from all that extra fat they are carrying that actually protects them.
Skinny fat people can be hard to pinpoint
Often, an obese person is easy to see, you just have to look at them and you can see that they are overweight.
For a skinny fat person, to find out whether they are suffering from any of the related diseases, they have to go for several blood tests to measure their cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. This can help the doctor to determine whether are you one of the metabolically obese people.
Skinny fat people usually have a fatter body part
As mentioned earlier, these metabolically obese people or thin outside, fat inside people normally have a body part that is fatter. It may be your love handles, your beer belly, fat ankles, a chubby face or even a big bottom.
If you have any of these, you might want to check with your doctor about going for blood tests to determine whether are you as healthy as you think.
Skinny fat people do not have enough muscle
It all boils down to the muscle-to-fat ratio on a skinny fat person. It is absolutely crucial to build muscle if you want to look toned as opposed to just thin. In fact it is much healthier for you and you look better too.
Skinny fat people can be flabby
Sometimes, skinny fat people become like that because they focus on losing weight instead of building muscle mass. Suddenly all the weight is lost but no muscle is built, resulting in flabby skin that doesn’t look good when not clothed, as opposed to a fat person who is fat all over the body.
Weight does not equal health and well-being
For as long as we have been aware, being slim and thin has always been equated with being healthy and fat as being unhealthy. However, as recent studies have shown, the number on the scale is not a reliable source for determining person’s health. Instead, we should focus on maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise in order to be healthy and fit.
Women tend to experience the skinny fat problem more than men
Women are constantly under enormous media and peer pressure to look thin as this means they are more desirable. This is also why fat shaming is getting more prevalent especially on the Internet. These women will do everything they can to lose excess weight, but sometimes they may be doing it wrong.
Cutting out calories severely, doing only cardio workouts and minimal weight training is one of the fastest ways to lose weight but at the cost of losing your muscle too. Don’t focus on losing weight, instead focus on being toned and fit.
