10 Funny Ways 90s Kids Used to Attract Their Crushes’ Attention Before Facebook Existed

Nowadays, whenever you want to stalk your crush, all you have to do is to turn on your mobile phone, put their name into the Facebook search bar and ta-dah! You’re able to stalk them completely.

Back then, when we were in secondary school, we were still in the era of Friendster and mIRC. Whether we wanted to follow our crushes around or just to attract their attention, we had to do it the hard way.

Here are 10 funny ways us 90s kids used to attract the attention of our crushes before Facebook  came out.

If you’re a 90s kid, how many of them have you done before?

Taking a detour just to walk with her
I bet I’m not the only one to do this. I stay just next to the school, but I’ll purposely walk “home” with her by pretending I actually stayed a couple of blocks away from her.

Taking a longer detour by taking the same bus
Same situation, except this time I took a bus further away just to take the same bus with her. Then I’ll take a return bus back home.

Doing whatever you can to stand out from the rest
Whether it is by being extremely cheeky in class, always getting sent out of the classroom, always getting detention…well, you get the idea, don’t you?

Sign in and out of MSN to let her know I exist
Remember how MSN will notify you whenever someone from your friend’s list signed out and in? Yup, I made sure she knew my existence by signing in and out of MSN repeatedly, then I’ll say “connection problem” when she ask me about it.

The status bar below your MSN name
That bar was pretty cool back then and it can be set to name the song you’re currently listening to. We might not have Facebook status update, but we had that awesome bar.

That’s how I got my first girlfriend, by putting her initials there. When she asked me if the initials were hers, I said yeah, and that’s how I got the girl. MSN was super awesome.

Asking for help with your homework
Doesn’t matter if you know how to do it or not. It’s just a chance for you to talk to her anyway.

Telling our parents that we have remedial class after school
Not really, you just want to stay back because to look at her because she’s staying back in school as well.

Studying together at McDonald’s
Unlike now, McDonald’s in the past was less strict and students weren’t really chased out when its peak hours. Why study at such a noisy place instead of at your own home? To see her lah! You’ll be surprised at the number of couples that sprouted from studying together.

Leaving a box of chocolate under her desk on Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s day is the day when girls reach under the desk for their textbooks and find a box of chocolate instead. Sigh…puppy love at its finest. And if you’re brave enough, you’ll leave a love letter as well. Although it rarely works out well.

Trying to go to the same school as her
Because there’s no Facebook, this means once she goes to a different school, chances are you’ll lose all contact with her. So the only thing you can do is try to get into the same school with her. That’s why if your crush is smarter than you, you’ll find yourself chionging like crazy for your O levels. Ah, how love can change a person…
