Ah, PlayStation.

If the image of a large black device appears in your mind after reading the word “PlayStation”, then you probably should be a pretty young fellow, because to an uncle like me, PlayStation is grey, big and bulky, and the “Open” button is as big as the “Power” button.

A 90s kid would always remember the PlayStation as this badass machine.

And while we’re at it, here’re the ten memories we have about this system–memories that will never, ever leave our mind. Never.

Start-up screen that made your next hour awesome

After this, your next hour or so would be the best hour of that day. Like, really.

Using it as a CD player

One of the best functions of the PlayStation then was its ability to play music CD; I mean, music players used to cost as much as a PlayStation! And look at the screen: it could even shuffle the songs! Now, finding a music CD is as hard as finding a working PlayStation.

Memory Card Always Full

How would you feel if you can only save about 15 games in a crazily expensive memory card? Angry. Annoyed. Sad. And it got even worse when the card got corrupted, and your Level 99 characters in your RPGs all disappeared without a trace.

Cheating with Gameshark

When it comes to cheating, nothing is as ethical as cheating with Gameshark. We now know how it works (since we know more about coding now), but in the past, this tiny device is like a magical gem created by the gaming Gods. Seriously.

Laughing at friends who bought a Sega Saturn

Before PlayStation, Singaporeans were divided between Sega and Nintendo. When PlayStation came out, some jokers decided that it would be a battle between Sega and Sony, and Sega would prevail–but we were soon laughing at the kids who had to blow dust off their Sega Saturn.

Final Fantasy 7 & Metal Gear Solid

Back in the day, no one expected games to be so good. And they’re so good, even after about twenty years, people are still playing them. If you have a PlayStation, you’ll have played them at least once before.

Reading EGM Because No Internet

Because not everyone had Internet access then, we had to buy magazines to read about the latest games, and Electronic Gaming Monthly, one of the gaming magazines available in Singapore then, was a popular choice among Singaporeans. And take a look at this issue: there’s even an FF7 preview!

Dancing with Dance Dance Revolution

Oh, Wii, step aside. Before you came, PlayStation had a game called Dance Dance Revolution and we danced at home on the electric mat before showing off our moves in arcades. And trust me, we took our dance seriously, especially “Butterfly”.

“Please insert Disk 2”

I don’t know about today’s games, but in the grey PlayStation era, there were some games that came in several CDs, and halfway through the game, you’ve got to switch CD. Is it just me, or did anyone’s heart skip a beat as you insert the next CD, fearing that it might not work?

Now Loading…Forever

Okay, we all had no issue with slow loading time, but we all had issues with loading that didn’t work. Seeing the loading bar stuck there would only result in this thought: When did I last save the game?
