In Tokyo alone, you will find many restaurants that offer many delectable versions of the ramen.

1. Kohmen Ikebukuro
In Ikebukuro, lies one of the most popular ramen restaurants that attracts crowds of tourists and locals alike. Kohmen Ikebukuro has been making headlines since 1995, with its famous curry noodles that is stewed in a pork bone soup. The establishment can house up to 40 guests in its 2-floor setup and is 2 minutes away from the JR Ikebukuro Station (East Gate).

2. Danbo Ikebukuro
At Danbo, the chef uses a cooking technique that creates a flavourful bowl of ramen from pork bones. If you like spicy dishes, you can try their Fiery Ramen which allows you to choose the level of spiciness as well as firmness of noodles and taste of the broth. Apart from their famous ramen, Danbo has other delectable side dishes like their red miso-flavoured dumplings.

3. Ramen Nagi
Ramen Nagi serves a unique bowl of ramen noodles and wins in aroma and presentation. This restaurant has captured the hearts of people around Asia, with branches in the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Try its famous Black King ramen, which has garlic and calamari ink base, or its Green King that has a fresh basil and olive oil base. Yum!
In the Shinjuku area, the shop is located at the first floor of the Oomori Building and it is open all week long, even on holidays!

Bloomberg once listed this restaurant as the best ramen in Tokyo. Order the Tsukumen, or the “deconstructed ramen”, that includes a bowl of chilled ramen which you can plunge into hot and flavourful bowl of chicken and fish broth.
Fun fact: one of the founders, Shigeyuki Miyake, was once a celebrity in the movies.

5. Yakimen Tsurugi
If you are around Takadanobaba-Waseda area, don’t forget to drop by Yakimen Tsurugi. This ramen heaven has made it to magazines and TV because of its delicious and crunchy noodles. You can choose from the regular noodles, fried noodles and grilled noodles with toppings that range from fried eggs to roasted pork fillet. It prides itself in the thick pork bone and vegetable soup. According to the Yakimen website, they close once the shop runs out of soup!

6. Tsukemenya Yasube
Also in the Takadanobaba-Waseda area is the Tsukemenya Yasube ramen house. While the shop looks very traditional, its ramen is no way ordinary. You can choose your noodles serving size, the saltiness level, and between superb toppings like roast pork, baked seaweeds, bamboo shoots, boiled gyoza or barbecued pork.

If you find yourself in Tokyo Ramen Street, then drop by Rokurinsha. The noodles are thick and chewy while the broth is rich with the flavours of pork and fish. After finishing your noodles, the servers pour your bowl with hot dashi, a Japanese broth, so you can finish what’s left of your soup.

8. Shio Ramen Hirugao
Shio Ramen is one of the more traditional ramen shops in the Tokyo Ramen street area. Chefs recommend the Specialty Shio (shio means sea salt). The owner, a self-taught ramen chef, moulded his craft for 10 years and is continually looking for ways to improve on the dishes. It has expanded into Asia and even New York, where it was awarded “Best of New York” for the restaurant category.

Afuri Ramen’s soup base is made from whole chicken, seafood, and vegetables that are carefully cooked in Ashiyama natural water. One of its bestsellers, the Yuzu Shio Ramen, enchants the senses with its unique citrus flavours.

Founded in 1992, Tonchin is one of the more established ramen shops in Tokyo. Its broth is a combination of chicken, vegetables and pork and you can choose if you want your noodles cooked soft or firm.

This is where you go if you want an all-kill Tokyo ramen experience.
