4 new BIG features coming to WhatsApp, and you’ll love #1

Many years ago, the only function of WhatsApp is just texting: nothing fancy, nothing else. But in the last few years, WhatsApp has been introducing so many new features that it seems like some other apps in your phone are going to become desolate: who else still uses normal voice call when you could just WhatsApp call?

Owned by Facebook (that is also always introducing new features!), there are now rumours of four new features that will make you go, “Finally!” As mentioned in several of our articles, whenever there’re rumours, it will usually be available in the next few updates, since the rumours are most likely from beta users.

So hold your breath now and let’s dive into these rumoured features now!

Video-calling
Available in other messaging apps like Viber and Skype, this latest feature might just make the good old voice call desolate, and make Star Trek a reality. One of the things we hate about other apps’ video calls is the shakiness and unreliable reception—if WhatsApp can solve that, we could all be video-calling soon.

According to Indian Express, the feature is already in its beta version (v2.16.80) for Android devices. First announced last month, the version will provide two options: Voice call or Video call. However, testers have seen this message upon trying it: “Couldn’t place call. Video calling is unavailable at this time.” Well, the time is definitely going to come soon, eh?

Sharing music
WhatsApp already has the function of sharing videos and documents, but music-sharing is something new. According to German site Macerkopf, this could be just for iOS, and users could even share tunes from Apple Music as well. In it, users can even view the album art. While this is only for iOS, I believe it will also be available on Android as well, albeit at a later date.

Sticker Emojis
You know those large emojis you see in Facebook Messenger and Skype? Yeah, they’re finally coming to WhatsApp. While the functionality of them is up for debate (except that they can “express emotions better”), it sure is still a large improvement from the usual tiny emojis we’re used to.

Public Groups
WhatsApp groups are usually very private, and that’s fine, but what if you would like to join a group that shares your interest? If this really occurs, it means we could just search for a group (say, “Singapore Badminton”), join them and then find like-minded friends. For the first time, WhatsApp could finally be ditching its focus as a communication app, but moves on to be a social app as well. The information of this is very hazy and unclear (unlike the previous three features that are more or less confirmed), so don’t pin so much hope on this yet!
