Did you know that the Mid-Autumn Festival, or more commonly known as the Mooncake Festival, falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month every year? And this year, it’ll be happening on 24 September.

In Singapore, this festival is usually celebrated by feasting over a variety of interesting mooncake flavours and admiring the full moon with family and friends. Traditionally, people will also take this opportunity to 提灯笼, which directly translates to carrying lanterns. Most places will also be going all out to impress Singaporeans with an array of cute and pretty lanterns. So, if you’re all about taking #OOTD shots, here are some places you can visit during this season to up your Instagram-game:

Vivocity

If you’re an avid Disney fan or one of those people on the MRT train frantically swiping your fingers across the screen to link up Tsum Tsums, the lantern display at Vivocity’s Skypark will be your paradise on earth. With over 2,000 adorable Disney Tsum Tsum lanterns on display, a life-sized Cinderella carriage, Beauty and the Beast throne and Snow White setups, this is every Disney fan’s dream come true! We will recommend staying till at least 7pm because that is when the lanterns will light up and when the magic really begins. For the best photo-ops, head over to the main Mickey and Minnie display or the life-sized Cinderella carriage!

Head over to Gardens by the Bay and be awed by their widest lantern set to date. At a height of 10.8m and a width spanning 70m across, this huge instalment sits over the Dragonfly Lake and illustrates the story of a carp transforming into a mighty dragon. With the iconic Super Trees as a backdrop, this is one of the many photo-ops you can get around the park. Other highlights of this year’s “Autumn with Fantasies” theme is the Colonnade of Lights installation where you can admire a resplendent gallery of 1,000 hand-painted lanterns by the Singapore community and an instalment called “Wonder of the Underwater World” where you can see a large display of 126 lanterns shaped like sea creatures.

For an insightful look into the origins and history behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, you should head over to Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. Of course, besides all the history and stories, they have also prepared lantern installations for your #OOTD shots. And this year, the hall decided to focus on featuring lanterns across the different Southeast Asian nations to celebrate Singapore’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2018. In addition, Singapore’s Largest Mooncake will also be unveiled on 22 Sep at the hall, so be sure to head down to not only snap photos but also sample a taste of it.

Esplanade Moonfest
(Esplanade)

Esplanade’s annual MoonFest is also one of the spots to head to this Mooncake Festival! Every year, the theatres organise a festival that caters to both the young and old to learn more about this old tradition through fun activities and performances. As part of the festivities, a huge lantern walkabout along the Esplanade waterfront will also be held. So bring your lanterns and cameras along and prepare yourself for a fun time of lantern walking and countless photo-ops along the way!

When: Now till 4 Oct

Light up: 7.30pm till late

Chinatown

No surprises here – Chinatown definitely has to be one of the places you have to go this Mooncake Festival to not only take awesome #OOTD shots but also to experience the cultural aspect of this Chinese festival. With street shows, craft activities, street bazaars and carnivals lined up, there certainly will be something for everyone. On top of all these, the streets of Chinatown and the area near Chinatown Heritage Centre will be decorated with beautiful traditional lanterns and huge installations depicting life in Singapore during the 50s and 60s. It also helps that the decor and shops that line up the streets are already excellent backdrops for your photo-ops. As part of the celebrations, you can also join in the Mass Lantern Walk activity that will be happening on 23 Sep. P.S. We will recommend going there slightly earlier because there will be fireworks on display and even exhilarating dragon dance performances lined up!
