If you’ve been on the internet for the past few days, you’d have seen McDonald’s going all out with their Rendang Sedap Angus Beef Burger.

And people all over the internet were going crazy over it.

But did you know that McDonald’s isn’t the only one that came out with new items in recent months?

Fast food businesses in Singapore are busy churning out new food by the week, almost like how Goody Feed churn out our articles.

We’ve been quietly trying out all the new fast food items as they came out.

And although some of them might not be as popular as the mainstream items you typically hear about, they’re good.

So good, in fact, that we just had to write an article for them.

Here are 5 underrated fast food items in 2018 you must try. Before they disappear from the menu for good.

1. Burger King’s Teh Tarik Pie

If you haven’t tried Burger King’s Teh Tarik Turnover, you should before it runs out. I have no idea how Burger King did it, but this pie is out of this world.

The hot, oozing teh tarik filling tastes like the real deal, and the sweetness is contrasted perfectly by the crispy, slightly salty crust of the pie.

When you bite into the pie, the fragrance of teh tarik fills your mouth immediately. And the filling doesn’t taste artificial. In fact, it tastes like my favourite teh tarik at the Old Boon Lay food centre before they changed their tea leaves.

Right now, Burger King’s selling a teh tarik pie at just $1, so don’t say bojio, okay?

2. KFC’s Signature Grilled Chicken

KFC’s healthiest chicken to date, the Signature Grilled Chicken is something to be excited about.

First thing first, the chicken’s huge. It’s basically a drumstick and a thigh put together. And the skin looks amazingly good.

And the chicken tender AF.

Juices will burst into your mouth with every bite. Hey, I didn’t claim to be a food writer, stop complaining, boss.

But the taste is a-maz-ing. If you love Pizza Hut’s sweet and spicy drumlets, you’ll love this.

Think of it as an incredible upsize of those drumlets.

Each piece of KFC’s Signature Grilled Chicken will cost you $5.90. And let me tell you, it’s worth every cent.

3. Popeyes Chilli Crab Mantou

You’d think Popeyes is only good at Mashed Potatoes and Chicken tenders but they’re more than that.

Now, they can proudly add a third iconic product to their menu: the Chilli Soft Shell Crab Mantou.

The whole crab is crispy – every bite comes with a flavourful crunch, and every bite is sinful yet fulfilling. Even from afar, you can still smell the distinct soft-shell crab aroma.

The sauce, though, doesn’t do justice to the burger – however, if you disregard that, the crab goes well with mantou. After all, crabs and mantous are BFF, remember?

4. McDonald’s D24 Durian McFlurry

Yes, I was at Clementi. And yes, I place it on the ground beside a drain so ang mos would think that durians do smell like drain water

Finally, one item from McDonald’s that made it onto the list.

Forget the Ha Cheong Gai Chicken Burger, this is the one new item you should try, if you haven’t.

While incomparable to the real deal, McDonald’s did justice to the awesomeness of durian with this McFlurry.

The durian looks like syrup, but when you bite into it, you’ll know its real durian immediately. Why? Because you’ll taste the fleshy fibre of durian that’s hard to emulate in syrup.

And the fragrance of durian is pretty much overpowering, which is what durian lovers will approve of.

The only problem I had? Fans of bittersweet durian probably need to adjust their taste buds a bit for this.

Because this entire dessert is sweet. With no hint of bitterness at all.

5. Old Chang Kee Chilli Crab ‘O

Okay, I get it, some of you might take offence to this being on the list. Hello! Old Chang Kee is not fast food hor!

Well, it’s fried and you can get it fast. Hence, fast-food. That and, well, this is just too awesome not to recommend.

Imagine piping hot crunchy skin, with spicy, sweet and salty chilli crab within. And the taste of crab roe and meat perfectly balances out the taste. Now bite into it, and the chilli crab practically flows into your mouth.

And don’t get me wrong, this ain’t no fake crabmeat. The smell and taste of the filling just scream of the real thing.

Although I wish their crab meat could come in bigger pieces.

In fact, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that this combination of puff and chilli crab is only second to the mantou and chilli crab combination.

Now that, no one can beat. But this came damn close.
