Whenever anyone thinks of Christmas, images of Santa Claus, reindeer, candy cane and snow covered landscapes fill the imagination. Christmas is a special time of the year because this is when families get to spend time together.
Christmas is also a peak season for travelling. Many people get on a plane and head out to where they can get a winter experience. However, this also means that it’s the peak holiday season. Hotel rates and plane tickets will be at their highest, especially to destinations like Europe.
But if Europe is tough on your wallet, you can consider a less conventional Christmas destination — to holiday in Malaysia itself.
Here are some reasons why:
1. Malaysia Has Its Own French Village
There’s no need to travel all the way to France this Christmas, as there’s a perfectly wonderful replica right here. Just 40 minutes outside of the Klang Valley is Bukit Tinggi, where you’ll find Colmar Tropicale. It’s a resort that has been designed to look exactly like the 18th Century village of Colmar in France.
The resort is open to visitors and you can choose to stay here in one of their rooms, or visit it as part of a day trip. There are many activities for visitors to enjoy, including performances and carnival style game booths. Restaurants and shops are plentiful too, as you can travel to nearby attractions while here, including serene Japanese gardens.
2. Malaysia Has Cool Weather Too
It’s usually warm and humid in Malaysia all year long. However, there are some places in the Malaysian highlands that promise cooler weather. One good example of this is Cameron Highlands, where the night time temperatures can drop to 15 degrees Celcius.
Visitors come here to enjoy the fresh strawberries, fruits and vegetables, as well as to sample some excellent tea. Tudor themed buildings are a common sight here, as are rolling terraces planted with tea. Many visitors also list having a hot pot or steamboat dinner as a must.
3. There’s Even Snow in Shah Alam
If you’d like to experience some ice and snow this Christmas, i-City theme park is where you want to head to. Located in Shah Alam, Selangor, this park is just a 30 minute drive from the city center.
Apart from the SnoWalk where visitors can see ice sculptors, play on a sleigh and frolic in snow a, there’s a garden of digital lights, a space themed exhibit and a water park.
4. The Mall Decorations Are Fantastic
Every Christmas, every mall in Malaysia would be trying to outdo one another in terms of Christmas decorations, and every year each mall would adopt a different theme. From magical fairies to toy boxes, there are endless opportunities for photographs.
Apart from the various sales going on, you’ll also want to check out the special attractions each mall offers. An example of this would be the theme park in Berjaya Times Square that’s complete with a roller coaster.

5. Splendid Christmas Buffets All Around
The Christmas season sees many hotels and restaurants offering special buffets. Christmas buffets in Malaysia are particularly special as there will be local dishes from the Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures as well traditional Christmas offerings like turkey and roast beef.
You’ll be able to find delicious Christmas buffet deals at sites like Fave, and bring the cost down even further by getting some sweet, sweet cashback (up to 9%).
6. See the Christmas Lights at Portuguese Settlement
Melaka has seen a long history of colonization, and at one time the Portuguese occupied this port town. They left a rich heritage in the form of a settlement, which is still lived in today by their descendants. Every Christmas, the largely Catholic Portuguese Settlement transforms into a Christmas wonderland complete with lights and various entertainment.
