8 Facts About the Massive Yishun HDB Fire That Happened Yesterday

The grass is green; the sea is blue; something weird happened in Yishun.

Though to be fair, Yishun has been behaving pretty well recently, considering its more than erratic behaviour in past times. But it seems that the old saying is right.

A neighbourhood never changes its paint.

Unless you request for paint services to paint your walls of course, but that’s beside the point.

1. What happened?

On Sunday (24 June) morning, a fire broke out in an HDB flat in Yishun.

The incident, which saw thick billowing streams of smoke to emanate from the fourth-floor corridor, resulted in two people being taken to the hospital.

2. Video Footage

Facebook user Dahlia SenSasi managed to capture first-hand footage of the fire, and it proved to be a wild one.

(P.S. This is the Stomp version)

In the early morning time, when the hot wind blows…

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

3. SCDF

Our own fire-fighting power rangers, the Singapore Civil Defence Force, said that they were alerted to the fire at Block 663 Yishun Ave 4 at about 7:00 a.m.

Thereafter, they deployed a total of two fire engines, a Red Rhino, two fire bikes, an ambulance and three support vehicles to the scene.

4. Self-evacuation

Once the fire-fighters were at the scene, they set to work. At least six firefighters were tasked to break into the corner unit where the fire stemmed from, and they put out the flaming menace with water jets.

Kudos, SCDF.

But it seems that they didn’t have to do any evacuations, as the aforementioned cases actually self-evacuated before the SCDF even arrived. They were later taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

5. 100 evacuations

The police, on the other hand, was quite busy with escorting people out of their houses. According to SCDF, a total of 100 residents were evacuated by the police.

Prior to that, people can be spotted knocking on doors on the other floors to alert residents of the incident.

Nice one la, residents. Nothing like some good ol kampung spirit when the hot wind blows.

6. Viral

The incident, which was documented and uploaded onto Facebook, subsequently went viral, with over 6.9K shares (and counting).

And Netizens were generally worried about it.

Though some, rather than talking about the fire, found themselves talking about the elusive…

7. Halimah Yacob

According to several sources, the fire actually broke out in Block 663, Yishun Ave 4.

So here’s the thing, Yishun Ave 4 is what’s widely believed to have been the area our beloved president Halimah Yacob used to stay in before she was so unceremoniously evicted- I mean encouraged to move out.

But according to several comments in the video’s comment section…

It might have even been Halimah Yacob’s old housing estate.

Is this why Halimah Yacob didn’t want to move out?

8. Conspiracy theories

As of current time, the reason for the outbreak of the fire has yet to be discovered/publicly disclosed.

But if we were to take a Netizen at comment value…

Which is a definite possibility, though just like the second comment we have no idea whether it’s true.

But if we’re talking about conspiracy theories this one definitely has our vote.
