JB may be every Singaporean’s go-to destination for a short getaway trip, with KSL and City Square being regular haunts for many. Cheap eats, cheap thrills; that’s what most of us associate Malaysia with.

But it’s so much more than that.

Boasting a rich heritage with both Asian and European influences, Malaysia offers countless attractions – as long as you know where to look.

1. Langkawi

Beautiful beaches, glistening sand, crystal-clear waters. What more could anyone ask for?

Often overlooked – especially by Western tourists – in favour of the better-known Phuket and Krabi Islands, Langkawi offers a relaxing getaway complete with luxuriant vegetation and fauna. If you’re a nature lover, make this a stop in your itinerary.

2. Malacca

The Peranakan city of Malacca is a must-visit. With colonial sites peppered throughout, it’s no surprise the old town managed to make it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’re more of a shopping person, there are many options for you here. Pop by the quaint shophouses lining the streets if you’re looking for little knick-knacks, or head over to the Mahkota Parade mall for more upscale shopping.

3. Central Market

If you’re visiting on the weekends, do check out the night market in the evenings. Both locals and tourists alike love dropping by to purchase fresh meat, fish and also vegetables and fruit from here.

6. George Town

The capital city of Penang, George Town’s multicultural heritage is especially evident in the city’s eclectic architecture of historical sites and old colonial buildings. It also houses many religious venues, from Anglican churches to Muslim mosques. As one of the top cultural attractions in Malaysia, this is a must-go for culturally-inclined travellers.

7. Taman Negara

At 4343 square kilometers, Taman Negara is the biggest National Park in Malaysia, straddling three Malaysian states; Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

Hiking, bird watching, fishing, trekking down the 530-metre long suspended Canopy Walkway – there’s definitely no lack of things to do here. For those that don’t have the option of visiting the jungles of Borneo, this is a nice alternative.
