92kg E-Scooter Seized, Heaviest PMD Confiscated By LTA So Far: 6 Topics S’poreans Talked About Today (4 June)

E-scooters are a danger on the pavements of Singapore.

It’s so dangerous LTA had to make new regulations with immediate effect on Labour Day, the day where people are supposed to be resting.

Yet, even with new rules and harsher punishments, you still have people who try to play the system.

Like this guy.

In case you somehow missed the memo, the heaviest PMD allowed in Singapore is 20kg. This dude here weighs almost 5 times the legal limit.

Which makes you wonder, what was the guy riding this monster thinking?

Back in Oct 2017, a teenager on an e-scooter collided with a 54-year-old woman, causing her to sustain serious head injuries. It was so serious she entered a coma and her life was essentially destroyed.

Now, imagine this e-scooter knocking into someone on the streets. The consequences will be even worse, even if the rider was riding within the speed limit of 25km/h.

So you can call me a scaredy cat but I’m glad that this device is taken off the streets.

After all, even if the e-scooter riders obey the new PMD riding regulations, accidents can still happen.

As PMDs and bicycles become more common on the streets of Singapore, Transport Minister Khaw said that users need to take responsibility for the safety of others and themselves.

In other words, grow up, please. Stop being a danger to other people on the road.

Makansutra Founder Says Govt Should Stay Out Of Hawker Business

Remember KF Seetoh? Or maybe, you’d know him as the guy from Makansutra.

When asked about what he thinks of the hawker culture in Singapore, he says that it’s an important part of the Singapore identity that cannot be lost.

Singapore food is unique, despite it being brought over by our ancestors from another land. He used Hainanese Chicken Rice as an example.

In Hainan, chicken rice is served with chicken, rice and ginger dip. When it came to Singapore, it evolved over time.

First, it was served in the same way as its place of origin. Then, some smart dude used chicken stock to cook the rice until it becomes the fragrant rice we know today.

The chilli, he says, doesn’t even exist in Hainan. Yup, we’ve been eating the ‘hipster’ version of chicken rice all these while, through some of us cannot have chicken rice without the chilli.

And then, Singapore chicken rice gets imported into Hainan.

Recently, if you’ve been paying attention, you’d see the government trying to revive the hawker trade. They allow young people to rent stalls at way below market rate for a period of 3 to 6 months in an Incubation Stall Programme.

There, youngsters can try the hawker trade and decide if it’s the right one for them. They call these incubation stalls.

And Mr Seetoh thinks that’s not a good thing. He wants the government to butt out because with this new initiative, what the government is doing is to essentially throw money at you.

And young people will come in, expecting it to be easy when it’s not. Then, they quit.

He’d rather people go into the trade because of true passion, because they want to make it work even though it’s hard.

His suggestion? Let the hawker trade run naturally on its own. Keep rental down, and if it dies, let it die.

After the soil rots for a while, something new will shoot up in its place.

Do you agree?

AMK Accident Leaves One Car Flipped Over, Driver Arrested For Drink-Driving

The collision at Sheares Avenue, the accident at Clementi, and now, one at Ang Mo Kio.

On 2 June, STOMP reported on a car accident along Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 at night.

The police said that they were alerted to the accident at 11.28 pm and arrested a 65-year-old man for drink-driving.

North Korea Allegedly Wants To Open McDonald’s Within The Country

People once said that food is powerful. It has the ability to unite nations and people across the world.

Which is kind of true, when you think about it.

I mean, look at the Chicken Rendang saga. It united Singaporeans, Malaysians and Indonesians against MasterChef UK, didn’t it?

According to the Washington Post, Kim Jong Un might allow a McDonald’s franchise within the city of Pyongyang.

Which is a pretty big deal.

McDonald’s, while a fast food franchise, is often seen as the symbol of westernisation. This might help in changing their antagonistic view of the western world.

It was suggested that a McDonald’s will help show a different side of America to the North Koreans, which may go a long way in easing tensions.

Heartening, although one expert, Kayla Orta from the History and Public Policy Programme at the bipartisan Wilson Center, says she can’t see it happening anytime soon.

But at least the meeting between the leader of North Korea and the President of US is still going to happen.
