There’s a long-running joke in Singapore: Singaporeans don’t like to retire fully. Instead, they’ll pick up cardboard pieces and metal cans for exercise after retirement.

Now, before you shoot me with a SAR-21, not I say one ah.

And now, a new study was published, proclaiming Singapore to have the third highest average life expectancy in the entire world by the year 2040.

Yay, more time to pick up cardboard liao.

New Study Shows S’pore Average Life Expectancy To Increase

A new study conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) said that Singaporeans will live longer in 2040.

We will have an average life expectancy of 85.4 years to live, an increase of 2.3 years from 83.1 years back in 2017.

The two countries that won Singapore is Spain at 85.8 years and Japan at 85.7 years.

Average Global Lifespan Expected To Increase

To be exact, the “better” scenario predicted would see all 158 countries having their average lifespans increased, and 46 nations might see an increase of 10 years or more.

But at the same time, the study also cautioned that the situation might just worsen.

In a “worse” scenario, you’ll see life expectancy decreasing in 87 countries, while 57 other countries will see an increase of one year or more.

The Top Killers Of The Year, 2040

The health study also dabbled in some fortunetelling and foretold the top killers of the year, 2040.

They include:

  • Lower Respiratory Infections
  • Ischemic Heart Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Hypertensive Heart Disease
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD)

The Reason Why This is Happening in S’pore

The two factors that contributed to this increase is our health system (Singapore’s world-class medical system) and how the government is tackling health issues in Singapore.

The Singapore government has been actively trying to improve the health of its people, including coming up with various ways to get Singaporeans to quit smoking.

Here, take a look at these smoking-related articles we’ve published recently (and hopefully you’ll quit after that):

Also, most of the jobs in Singapore today are office jobs and our people are leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles.

In a bid to encourage more Singaporeans to get out more (after Pokemon GO died a nasty death), the government decide to do it the Singaporean way.

By dangling free money in front of our faces.

Like the National Steps Challenge.

This is a nationwide initiative where people can clock their steps and win some vouchers.

I mean, walk (which is what we do every day anyway) and you can get free EZ-Link card dollars?

And Singaporeans being Singaporeans, will definitely walk more than what they usually do, given how it’s free cash, right?

By the way, the next season of the National Steps Challenge is coming up soon. In 8 days’ time (the screengrab was from yesterday), to be exact.

So if you want some chance at winning yourself some free vouchers, just download the Healthy 365 app from Health Promotion Board and sign yourself up for it.

Like Uncle Leong would say, “So simple!”

Don’t say bojio hor.
