Do you, or your boy/girlfriend utter a lot of vulgarities? And by that, I mean CCB, KNN, f**k and all other creative combinations?

I do, and I get a lot of heck for it. Perfectly sensible people on the streets will look at me like I’m crazy, or have the urge to bring out their phones and stomp me because it looks like I’m constantly quarrelling with my wife.

Which I’m not.

I just have a dirty mouth. There, I said it. And you know what? Science says I’m an honest person.

Or at least more honest than that perfect gentleman who pretends not to know what a vulgarity is.

Yes, pretend. Don’t lie, you’ve been through NS, you confirm know what it is. You know, the thing about your father or mother your 3SG used to scream at you during BMT?

If you’re like me, someone who has the f-word or hokkien vulgarity constantly coming out of your mouth, then here’s some good news for you!

You’re an honest person. Check out what social scientists have found out about us.

Frankly, we do give a damn: The relationship between profanity and honesty

Researchers from the Department of Work and Psychology at Maastricht University decided to carry out a study to find a correlation between profanity (read: vulgarities) and honesty in individuals.

They wanted to solve the age-old social question: whether swearing means you’re more likely to lie, or less likely.

How many of you were expecting that to be the question? Not me. But I’m kind of glad it did because it showed me in a better light, yeah?

Okay, moving on.

So the researchers got down to work and did the study in three related studies on interpersonal, societal, and social media levels

First, they gave 276 individuals a personality test called the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to measure their level of honesty and the frequency of swearing.

Then, they looked at over 70,000 interactions on Facebook and compared the level of honesty and profanity used in conversations.

Finally, the team dug out data from the 2012 Integrity Analyses from 48 states in the US and compared them to the data on profanity from the Facebook study.

It was found that the more you swear, the more likely you an honest person.

Unfortunately, the research stopped there and the correlation between swearing and honesty wasn’t investigated.

Here’s a logical explanation though: because you swear (and it’s likely you don’t have the normal brain-to-mouth filter other people have), you’re more likely to just say whatever is on your mind and not care about what other people think of you.

That’s why you’re more honest!
