Boss Who Counted $1,000 Notes Giving Free Chicken Rice to Taxi Drivers

In the last three days, it has been a tough 72 hours for Mr Gary Lim.

Lest you’ve not been following the news, here’s what happened: Gary got into the online spotlight when this video went viral.

In it, he implicitly looked down on the taxi driver by counting $1,000 notes in front of him. That touched the nerves of many netizens, who went on to condemn his chicken rice stalls.

He has since spoken to the media, and said that he was deeply sorry for the incident. In his defence, he said that he was drunk and could not remember himself doing that.

Within 72 hours, after netizens exposed him and he becoming one of the most-talked figure in Singapore, he has come out again, this time a tad more sincere.

According to Shin Min (that is also the media he spoke to previously), he has taken the initiative to contact the taxi driver via the Chinese newspaper. He wanted to apologize to the taxi driver face-to-face, but as the taxi driver was working (you know, doing big things to support his family), they had a conversation on the phone instead.

The two-minute call had him apologizing to the taxi driver. He mentioned that he has never been so drunk, and did not have the intention to say these words. Going forward, he sought the driver’s forgiveness.

The taxi driver accepted his apology and added that he didn’t take those harsh words into heart. He then advised Gary not to vent his frustration on others, and even wished him “the best”.

He also told Gary that one should show respect for others regardless of whether one is a cleaner or a CEO.

There’s a transcript of the conversation in the Shin Min report, but it’s in Chinese, so here’s a basic translation of what the taxi driver said:

“Sure, I accept your apology. Actually, I’m not affected. But before accepting your apology, I hope you understand that no matter what happens in life, you shouldn’t vent your anger on others. Get it? You should be acting like an adult. Hopefully, after this, you’ll have learnt your lesson and move on without stereotyping people based on their job. You should show basic respect to everyone, whether he or she is a cleaner or a CEO. No worries, I’m not affected, so all the best to you, okay? Let’s have a closure to this.”

Power lah, Mr Sun (that’s the name of the 33-year-old taxi driver).

In order to show his sincerity, Gary has prepared 200 packs of chicken rice for taxi drivers in two of his chicken rice outlets (100 each) on 2 May 2017, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Each driver is entitled to one pack, and it’s while stock last.

I’m pretty sure there’ll be many taxi drivers there—not for the free chicken rice, but to go and just tell him that they’ve forgiven him.

For all I know, they’ll buy some more chicken rice for their family.

Because most of the taxi drivers I know are just like Mr Sun.
