Does the Passenger Pay the ERP While Carpooling? Here’re the Facts

When you carpool, who pays the ERP?

Certainly, nobody wants to, but somebody has to. Ever since GrabHitch became a thing, some drivers have gotten into arguments with their passengers on this issue, and not a lot of people seem very sure. It even escalated to a case of an alleged molestation, but we’ll leave that for another day.

Instead, we’re here to clear up the issue of ERP charges instead.

According to Grab, GrabHitch drivers are supposed to pay any ERP fares. To prove we’re not bullshitting you, you can check it out yourself here.

Quite unfortunate, but that’s the way it is. However, the flat fare that the passenger pays includes surcharges that account for any ERP toll charges, so you’re technically not really paying for it.

It’s a different case for RYDE, however.

In case you haven’t heard of RYDE, it’s basically the same idea as GrabHitch. There’s an app whereby you book a carpooling ride, you get to carpool. In fact, it came out way before GrabHitch.

For RYDE, however, ERP charges are paid by the drivers by default, unless an agreement is reached between the passengers and the driver.

The ‘fare’ is meant as cost recovery for the driver, which does not include ERP as the driver is going the same way anyway.

Grab probably wants to keep everything the same, with all its GrabCar, GrabShare and others to not confuse everyone.

So if you’re really upset about this for some reason, you could totally use RYDE and discuss with your driver/passenger. You could maybe even decide on routes that avoid ERP gantries as much as possible!

At least until the inevitable GPS distance based ERP system without any gantries take over.
