What Happened?

A 42-second surveillance footage of a visit gone wrong made its way around the internet.

It showed a young man and his father-in-law waiting at a lift lobby in Cengong County, China.

Suddenly, the young man took out a lift key and opened the outer doors of the lift on the right before fiddling with something in the top lefthand corner.

The elderly man then brushed past the young man and walk into the empty lift shaft.

From the footage, you can see the young man freeze for a split moment before trying to catch his father-in-law as he fell.

Unfortunately, he failed and the elderly man fell 8 metres down the shaft to his death.

Netizens online were wondering how the young man could’ve gotten the key to the lift doors.

Some were even wondering if this was all planned.

Young Man Was Actually Trying To Figure Out What’s Wrong With The Lift

According to a report on Sina, the young man surnamed Zhou was actually an electrician in a property management company.

On that day, his father-in-law had requested to visit some relatives. The building that the relatives stayed at happen to be under his company’s charge.

He noticed that there was something wrong with the display panel of one of the lifts and decided to check it out.

He said that after he had opened the lift doors, he had forgotten about his father-in-law who just walked past him into the empty shaft.

The family is currently following up with the property management company about the case.

Don’t keep your eyes glued to the mobile phone and take things for granted.

Most young people today are able to look at their phones and walk at the same time. It’s because of a thing called peripheral vision.

You see something at the corner of your eyes and your body react accordingly.

For example, you’re walking along a pavement and you spy a yellow ofo bike riding in your direction.

You’d keep your eyes glued to the screen and step aside.

Our peripheral vision, while good for allowing us to multi-task, is also a bad thing.

Because it can’t see far, just a short distance.

So you were to see the lift doors open, chances are your body’s going to instinctively move into the lift by habit.

And if the lift isn’t level or is there yet, you’d probably fall into the shaft as well.
