Everything About SIA’s New Charges to Credit Card Purchases Departing from S’pore in 60 Sec

Oh, what the heck. This is a low blow.

I do understand that SIA isn’t doing very well, but the charges are simply uncalled for. For those of you who travel frequently via SIA, here’s a little heads up for you.

Starting from 20 Jan, said fee would be applicable to SIA’s new “Economy Lite” category of plane tickets.

In case you wanna know more about the new categories, here’s a screengrab from the website of SIA.

…So, if I were to pick “Lite”, I think it’s quite obvious that I’m trying to save some money, right? THEN WHAT’S WITH THE CHARGES?!

The “service fee”(1.3%) for the credit cards would be based on the total cost of the booking, capped at $50 per passenger.

“Since November 2016, we have implemented a similar credit card service fee in Australia and subsequently in other markets,” SIA said in response to queries from Channel NewsAsia. “The fee implementation in Singapore is therefore a progressive initiative,” it added.

Progressive? What’s so progressive about the charges? It’s just an excuse for SIA to charge us more money for selecting a cheaper package!

According to SIA’s website, the charges are meant to recover “costs relating to the acceptance of credit cards”.

However, the new fee will not affect passengers who are planning to use their KrisFlyer miles to book tickets or their credit cards to pay for any other taxes and charges. (Whatever happened to recovering lost costs?)

Geez, I’m fairly certain this is going to anger a lot of people- and boy were they fast to react to the backlash.

Perhaps in an attempt to appease the public, SIA announced on 4 Jan that they will be cancelling the plan to charge credit card fees “following a further review”, just a day after the initial announcement regarding the charges.

Huh, I guess the people really made their voices heard this time around. Let’s hope that SIA would not try something like this again in the future.

Anyway, I believe this is everything you need to know regarding SIA’s plans for now! (And this is all the time I have too!)

Since you’re here, why not watch a video about a guy who lodged a Police report here in Singapore because he was friendzoned? Seriously. Here, watch it and do remember to share it (and also subscribe to Goody Feed YouTube channel)!
