If there’s a story we need to tell our kids to restore faith in humanity, here’s one.

On 11 October 2016, a fire destroyed a market in Jurong West, leading many stall-owners helpless. The wet market was beyond repair and had to be demolished, damaging the livelihoods of several stallholders.

A 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting fire to Styrofoam boxes in the early morning of that day, and has since been charged for committing mischief by fire with the intent to destroy a building. He could be imprisoned for life or for 10 years with /and fined.

The authorities have stepped in to assist the affected stallholders by offering them new stalls nearby or new jobs.

Soon after the incident, The Newpaper ran a report about the lives of those who were affected by the fire, and one of them is Mr Neo Chwee Eng. He sold uncooked yong tau foo in the market for 20 years and is the breadwinner of his family, and the fire has made him lose $10,000, excluding any future income.

And here’s when faith in humanity was restored: Trinity Ong, Noah Ong and Caspar Ong, three siblings between the age of five to ten, chipped in to help when their mother showed Trinity the article, in which Trinity then showed it to her brothers.

They then asked their parents how they could help Mr Neo, so their father contacted the newspaper and got Mr Neo’s contact.

The total came out to be $325.60, and their parents topped it up to $500.

The amount, while not a lot, could mean the world to the kids: they had intended to use the money to buy toys.

According to the report, Mr Neo has once initially rejected donations from others, but could now be accepting them.

At least something good come out from the fire: the kind-heartedness of Singaporeans.
