So, yesterday, there was a wave of sighs in the office early in the morning: the ladies were disappointed that their muscleman Kim Jong Kook was leaving Running Man, and the guys were sad that they could no longer see their favourite imaginary wife Song Ji Hyo in the show.

Most, if not all, were convinced that they had left the show due to their change in their focus, just like Gary Kang.

But there’s just one thing that doesn’t make sense: why do they make the decision together? It’s like two people in a department just decided to resign from their jobs.

It turns out that there’s more to it.

In a report by Allkpop, the agencies managing the duo have come out to explain their departure. Here’s a report by an unnamed source: “Two weeks ago, there were talks of a format change, and a co-producer visited the filming set to announce it again. There were no talks of member changes at the time. On December 12, they had a meeting with Kim Jong Kook to tell him he was off the show. Song Ji Hyo only found out after the news made headlines. Everyone did know a change would happen as the ratings were dropping, but this type of farewell not only hurts the producers but the featured stars as well.”

Here’s what Song Ji Hyo’s agency has to say: “We knew Running Man would undergo format changes from SBS, but it’s true we found out from news reports which members would not return. We won’t comment on Song Ji Hyo’s feelings on the matter.”

And here’s what Kim Jong Kook’s label said: “It’s true he was told he was leaving with no decision about the matter. It’s disappointing. He featured in the show despite his health issues because he cared about it so much.”

The producers of the show did not say anything about the incident.

On a separate note, Kang Ho Dong, the popular MC who has been offered a role in the show, has declined to join the cast. In fact, in a weird twist, his label said that he did want to join the show, but it became “uncomfortable due to various situations”, so he changed his mind.

It seems like this isn’t just a simple case of someone wanting to focus on other things, but something more serious.

All I can say is that it’s time to watch Goblin instead of Running Man. #justsaying
