Maid Allegedly Plays a Victim Card When Employer Didn’t Provide Snacks & Time Off

In recent months, we’ve read countless stories of how foreign domestic workers were abused by their employers – some of the employers were even jailed for their abusive behaviours.

Or sometimes, we read stories about how the domestic workers abused the employers’ kids when they’re alone in the house, only to be captured by CCTV.

But this time, it could well be the first time that we’re seeing a domestic worker play the victim card instead.

Though, as usual, this is still a one-sided story, so it’s best to hold your judgement.

Facebook Post About Domestic Worker Playing the Victim Card Goes Viral

Yesterday afternoon, Facebook user Amy Tree posted a disturbing experience about her new domestic worker on Facebook.

No, the domestic worker didn’t abuse the kids nor did she steal any money. Instead, she, for the lack of a better phrase, played stunt.

Here’s the rather long post (you can just scroll down and skip them if you want to read the concise version):

So basically, here’s what allegedly happened:

  • Domestic worker has been transferred 3 to 4 times in a year
  • She just started work in this employer’s house for three months
  • According to the employer, she has extremely bad attitude like
    • Not cleaning things properly
    • Covered ears with pillow when the baby cries
    • Showers for one hour and changes clothes 3 times a day
    • And many more that the employer has listed (total of 24 points, to be exact)
  • On 11 October 2018 night, the domestic worker requested for time off and snacks, and after being rejected, she allegedly said, “You are the poorest and stingiest employer I ever worked for! If you cannot afford a maid, then don’t hire!”
  • She then threatened the employer when the employer didn’t return her phone and passport
  • The employer called the police, but the maid allegedly threatened to tell the police that she was abused if the police is called in
  • The domestic worker then “played stunt” and started her pity act
  • When the police arrive, the domestic worker told them these:
    • She was not fed enough
    • She did not have enough sleep
    • She was forced to massage her employer till midnight
    • She was given expired shampoo and shower foam (??? Shampoo got expiry date one meh?)
  • The employer then showed the police CCTV footage to clear her name
  • The domestic worker was then sent back to the agency the next day

Now, of course it’s unclear if the allegations are true, but here are some of the basic rights for a domestic worker:

  • Adequate accommodation
  • Adequate food
  • 1 rest day per week

Also, from 1 January 2019, employers would no longer be able to safe-keep money for their domestic workers.

Whatever it is, there’s just one thing we should learn from this incident: invest in a good CCTV. You’d never know when you need it.
