Maids Made To Sleep Outside Bt Timah House Because Their Rooms ‘Not Ready Yet’

We’ve seen plenty of maids come and go in our lives.

There are those nice ones who help to carry the fieldpack…

…and the not so nice ones who hit and abuse elderly women in their 80s.

But then, we have a third group of foreign domestic workers in Singapore: those who are not treated as well as their fellow FDWs.

Like the two maids we’re going to talk about now.

Maids Forced To Live Outside From Employer’s Bt Timah Home

The maids claimed that they’ve been living there since 31 July. Their employer allegedly told them that their rooms weren’t “ready” yet.

However, the maids said that if a few boxes are shifted, there’ll be enough room for the both of them to stay inside the house.

Not Given Enough Rest Time and Food

And if that isn’t enough, the maids are also being overworked and underfed.

They claimed that after their daily duties, they have to help their employer to pack over 3,000 wine bottles.

They do not get any afternoon breaks and work daily from 6 am to 11 pm or 12 midnight.

And on their Sundays off, they’re only allowed to leave at 1 to 2.30 pm. And they have to be back before 8 pm.

Their employer gave them a food allowance of $20 per week, and the duo has to resort to Maggi Mee, cans of tuna and pasta for their meals.

Employer Doesn’t Care What Happens To The Maids

One of the maids shared a photo of her friend’s injury when she fell down the stairs, and it wasn’t nice.

When the employer came to know about it, she told her that it’ll get better by itself. The employer allegedly didn’t want to send the maid to the doctor.

And she allegedly verbally abuse them too, calling their parents “stupid” and the pair “f**king idiots”.

Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Steps In

On 18 Aug, it was reported that the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has removed the two maids from their employer.

After a report was lodged, MOM immediately inspected the household to verify the claims made.

A spokesperson for MOM said that investigations into the case are still ongoing. However, the two maids have been removed from the household.

MOM would like to remind Foreign Domestic Workers (FDW) that if you have any issues with your employment, you should first approach your employer.

And if that failed, report it directly to MOM at 6438 5122 or the Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE) at 1800 2255 233.

Members of the public are encouraged to provide information on “FDW infringements” to MOM if they witnessed anything.
