Ever since young, we have been taught to be kind to animals.

They are our friends and also our best companion.

I mean, just look at the number of talking animals in those Disney movies!

But it is just the sad reality that not everyone seems to appreciate this fact.

At the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, and estimated 10,000 dogs are killed each year for consumption.

We also have heard of people who abuse and mistreat animals.

Just last Saturday (Feb 24), an angler was caught abusing a family of otters in Singapore.

This incident happened near Marina Country Club in Punggol Waterfront.

According to a passerby who identifies herself as Ms Chong, she was there at around 6.30pm when she saw a family of eight otters swimming away.

She was trying to capture this beautiful sight when she noticed a man throwing stones at one of the pups.

“Obviously, I was shocked. He did it not once, but twice, at two of the pups,” said Ms Chong.

According to The Straits Times, the family of otters are frequent visitors of the Punggol stretch since around two months ago.

The family comprise of parents, a sub-adult and five pups.

During that point in time, Ms Chong was separated from the man by a fence.
He was with five other male anglers, who did nothing to stop him.

Ms Chong stood there for a few minutes to make sure that the otters were not injured.

“I was glad to see the pups were okay and that they were all accounted for,” she said.

“I hope that people will be more tolerant of wild animals and share some of their space with them. The otters were there for only about five minutes and they went away. There’s no need to be cruel,” she added.
