McD’s New Hokkaido Salmon Burger Review: Worth Every Single Cent & Calorie

If there’s one thing you’ll love and hate McDonald’s for, it’s this.

It’s the fact that they make good food. At least in the fast food category, according to my colleague. *whoops, spoiler*

You love it because it tastes so good.

But you hate it too.

You know you need to slim down, but you just can’t stop.

That, and my very fat boss who keeps asking me to do food reviews. Fast food reviews, to be exact.

He keeps all the expensive options for himself.

Don’t Say Bojio: McDonald’s Launch New Japanese-Inspired Burger

On 3 May, McDonald’s Singapore released a new burger to Singaporeans.

Called the Hokkaido Salmon Burger, the patties are certified salmon from Hokkaido by a team from the Hokkaido prefecture (??? salmon needs to be certified one???).

Crammed together with crunchy cabbage and roasted sesame mayo, and wedged between two fluffy buns, it sounds like a dream come true for salmon lovers.

So we stole our fat boss’s credit card when he’s out there having a meal in a restaurant and ordered some of that goodness for ourselves. And this was what came.

A First Look at the Burger

Oh, what a first look it was. Look at that goodness within.

Looks like the ones on their posters, right?

We ordered the Double Hokkaido Salmon burger because, well, go big or go broke (and since it’s our boss’s card and not ours).

The burger comes with the crowd favourite, seaweed shaker fries, as well.

Beautiful, isn’t it?

But like what my colleague always say, it’s not a food review until you’ve eaten it.

Taste Test: Was it worth it?

I’ve got to confess. When I took my first bite of the highly-anticipated burger, I was disappointed.

The roasted sesame mayo simply tasted like the usual roasted sesame sauce they use for their salad.

But chew a couple of times and you’ll be singing a different tune.

The different textures and taste of the various ingredients just comes together into one, beautiful…

Culinary display.

So what if their ingredients tasted like previous products? You’re paying for how they put the ingredients together, not whether they’ve used it before, right?

The buns were fluffy, and at just the right thickness for that satisfying bite.

The salmon patties were soft, moist and flavourful on the inside, yet crispy on the outside.

And the crunchy cabbage with savoury roasted sesame mayo brings a refreshing twist to what would’ve otherwise been an overly-greasy burger.

One thing for sure, though.

I’m glad I got the double salmon patty. One just isn’t enough for most people.

Add some seaweek shaker fries into the menu and you know you’re going to enjoy yourself for the next 30 minutes.

So, should you order this burger? Hell, yeah!

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Yes, I’ve never liked a burger from McDonald’s so much after the Veggie burger. Not even the premium ones.

But just a warning, it all depends on a bit of luck.

My handsome colleague who convinced (read: scammed) the boss to buy him the burger said that he didn’t like his because it was dry.

What’s funnier is mine came ladened with sauce. His…was just like the McDonald’s cheese fries saga.

Fun Fact: This isn’t an old burger

Now, before you go on Facebook and start bragging about how Singapore is the first to get this burger…it’s not.

The Hokkaido Salmon Burger has allegedly made its way around the world from Thailand…

…Japan (obviously) and Taiwan.

They upped the game by putting in a beef patty together with the salmon, and it’s been pretty well-received over there.

Maybe we should get a quarter pounder and upgrade our Hokkaido Salmon burger, huh? #McDonaldsHack101
