The Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration honoured by the Chinese. It is more commonly known as the Lantern Festival or the Mooncake Festival.

Synonymous with bright lanterns, delectable mooncakes and excellent Chinese teas, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for feasting.

This year, it falls on 4 October 2017, Wednesday. While most people will not celebrate it on the actual day since it is a workday, you can expect the weekends before and after to be full of family gatherings.

Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival 2017

As a Chinese celebration, Chinatown has a big role to play during Mid-Autumn. This year, the celebrations officially kick off on Saturday, 23 September 2017 with an opening ceremony and the street light-up.

The lights will remain till 19 October. A carnival that celebrates the occasion has started since 10 September and will remain till 9 October. Street stalls and a festive trade fair will start from 20 September and run until 4 October.

Mass Lantern Walk 2017

Returning after a successful run last year, the Mass Lantern Walk 2017 will be held on 1 October from 7pm to 10pm. The starting point will be at Kreta Ayer Square and end at the main stage at New Bridge Road. Bring your family, light the lanterns and join in the festive mood!


Mid-Autumn Family Fest @ Chinatown

This is a new celebration starting this year. Bring your children to experience traditional festive activities such as mooncake-making, lantern painting, tea appreciation and calligraphy writing. There is something for everyone!

It will be held on the morning of 24 September at Kreta Ayer Community Club.


Mid-Autumn @ Gardens by the Bay 2017

Gardens by the Bay is not going to be outdone by Chinatown during Mid-Autumn Festival. It has one of the best avenue to see lanterns, so this year, it is showcasing various displays and activities.

From 22 September to 8 October, be dazzled by the glow of lantern displays at the outdoor gardens at Gardens by the Bay. Highlights of this event include the largest lantern set for display at the gardens – Water of Prosperity.

There is also a paddy field lantern with 4000 glowing stalks of rice! Of course, there will also be performances, a fun zone for children and a special edition of Garden Rhapsody.


Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2017

If you prefer something more traditional, head to the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall on 30 September or 1 October, from 10 am to 9.30pm.

There are programmes such as snow skin mooncake-making sessions, storytelling, games and lantern-making workshops. The grounds of Wan Qing Yuan will also be lighted up with large cellophane lanterns.

One Community Fiesta X Mid-Autumn Festival

Our Tampines Hub is hosting a celebration on 23 September called One Community Fiesta Celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival.

You can expect multi-ethnic cultural performances (because we are multi-racial), mid-autumn themed games, mooncake making and craft activities such as lantern making. This is not free though, and cost $2 per ticket.


Moonstruck Performance

Intrigued by the story of the lady in the moon? The Arts Fission Company is presenting a contemporary dance-theatre performance at the Singapore Botanic Gardens from 29 September from 7pm to 8pm at the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage.

Moonstruck is based on the Chinese legend of Chang Er and will be featuring music inspired by the moon such as Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. The performance is free so be sure to go early for a good picnic location.


Mooncake shopping

We should always celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with delectable mooncakes. The best places to buy them are the mooncake fairs popping up everywhere, like those in Takashimaya and Vivocity.

Besides the huge discounts you can get, they are also the largest fairs in town. Over 50 local and international brands are offering their wares at Takashimaya, while more than 35 brands are available at Vivocity. The fairs run until 4 October 2017.
