Remember the news that made all Singaporean drivers go “SIAN!”?

In August last year, our neighbours made the announcement that all foreign-registered vehicles travelling through Johor had to pay a RM20 (S$7.16) entry fee and apply for a Vehicle Entry Permit. This was obviously heartbreaking news for all the Singaporeans who make frequent trips to JB for food, shopping and car stuff (if you get the drift).

Vehicle Entry Permit
Since August 2015, all categories of vehicles ranging from individual- or company-owned private vehicles, commercial vehicles and diplomat vehicles are required to register for the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) if they wish to enter Malaysia.

The VEP is renewable every 5 years and the registration can be done online. According to Channel NewsAsia, for registration, the owner or representative appointed by the owner of the foreign-registered vehicle will have to provide information such his personal and car registration details.

RFID Tag
After you have successfully registered, you will be advised on the collection of a RFID tag to be displayed on the vehicle’s windshield at Malaysia Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) designated premises. During the tag collection, you will have to pay an administrative fee of RM10 (S$3.30). Do note that this cost is in addition to the RM20 (S$6.60) entry fee for foreign-registered vehicles travelling through Johor.

Deadline
The VEP registration deadline is set to be until the end of the year. If you have not registered, do register ASAP as the collection of the RFID tag will take some time. If you have registered but have not collected your tag, you still have time but you are advised to collect it as soon as you can to avoid any issues.

Where to collect
The information on the collection of RFID tag will be given to you after you have successfully registered your vehicle. The location, date and time will all be given to you so there is no need for you to worry. Just remember to collect your tag on the given day.

When does it start
Malaysia has already started its trial run for the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system for foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore since 2 June. As it is a trial run, the RM20 (S$6.60) fee will not be imposed until after July 15 when the trial ends.

Prices quoted are as of 3 June 2016
