NUS VS NTU VS SMU: Comparing the Trivial Matters

A level results have just been released recently. While some of us have a specific course to aim for, others were left in dilemma- where do we go from here?

Well, actually I’m not here to talk about grades and courses with you. I’m going from another angle, bringing out the trivial matters that will make your university life better.

Transport

Out of these three Universities, SMU is the only one in town area. The other two are situated towards the West, giving westies an advantage in terms of travelling distance. So if you’re living in the East, SMU is probably the nearest to you! Whereas located in the far west of Singapore, NTU is the most inaccessible out of the three.

But then again, Singapore is pretty small, and the travelling time can be used to do productive stuff like reading up on your notes or Netflix-ing, so this is pretty subjective.

Culture

Although these three universities in Singapore are yet to have a distinctive identity that we see in many Western universities, there are still some notable differences.

SMU has a business-oriented culture where students are encouraged to take initiatives. This can be seen in their seminar teaching style, or more interestingly, in how SMU students actively approach employers during career fairs and hand over their name cards, almost like they’re in a networking event.

On the other hand, NTU has a more laid-back culture, probably due to the university’s location being remotely surrounded by forests. It is not surprising to see students wearing slippers to attend lectures.

This leaves us with NUS, being known to be somewhere between the spectrums, providing a “culturally-safe” environment for many students.

Hall System

This might be one of your “first-time experiences” living in a university residential hall. Sounds exciting? Living in a communal environment allows you to integrate into the campus life and make friends along the way.

Currently, NUS and NTU have a comprehensive hall system where freshmen are guaranteed a place in a hall, while senior students are to bid for places using their hall points.

However, SMU does not have a hall system unlike the other two. Instead, it has a student hostel mostly dedicated to the international students. Which is understandable, considering that it is located in a more accessible part of Singapore.

University is more than a place which you study. Remember that you’ll be spending the next three to four years in that school, it is important that you consider the university’s culture, programmes as well as the location. Here’s to looking forward to an enriching life in your University!
