When it comes to family bonding, people would think that a great bonding way would be to go on a family vacation to a foreign country. Albeit it seems to be a fantastic way to strengthen the bond between family members, you might think otherwise after reading this article.

A study concluded that visiting new places and interacting with new people can leave families exhausted, with less ‘brain power’ to focus on relationships.

The best way to bond, according to the study, is to spend time at home doing ‘familiar activities’. That would be more satisfying and family members would be more likely to achieve the objective of family bonding.

Activities such as playing board games together, watching TV shows or just simply working as a team to complete tasks around the house could easily be more effective in strengthening family bonds than going to a foreign country for a vacation.

This is due to the fact that our brain, during an overseas vacation, is more focused on processing new information such as a new environment with unfamiliar people, and therefore less ‘brain power’ is available to focus on the family bonding objective.

What to Do at Home

An activity as simple as having a meal together as a family is a great indicator of a functioning family.

Leisure time such as watching TV allows family members to express their stress and conflict as well as pleasure during such activity.

So the next time you are thinking of planning a family bonding day, why not plan a simple one such as a classic game of monopoly or to just go and explore Singapore as a family together?

Whoever said family bonding have to be costly?
