Sega Bringing Retro Games to Your Smartphone for Free & It’s The Best Move Ever

You don’t need an expert to tell you that selling game consoles and games individually belonged to the dinosaur age: with an influx of free downloadable games, many of which could be indie games that are as good as those from game developers, paying hundreds of dollars to play a video game just isn’t working.

It’s just like Cable TV vs Netflix: the winner is obvious.

And that’s what Sega is doing with this new move: becoming a winner.

Just so you know (if you’re too young), Sega used produce game consoles, with its most popular one being the Sega Mega Drive (in the US, it’s called the Sega Genesis). From 2001 onward, they shifted their direction after years of loss with a few failed console releases and focused on game development.

And now, this.

Sega is releasing some of their best retro games to our smartphone, starting with five titles first, namely Sonic the Hedgehog (this was already released a while back—it’s updated to align with this initiative), Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Kid Chameleon, and Phantasy Star II. The goal is to release some games every two weeks.

These five games were a few of the most popular games in Sega Mega Drive then. If you’ve lived through the 90s as a kid, you might have played all of them. Personally, I remember playing Sonic, Altered Beast and Phantasy Star II.

The games are available globally, and a check on the Google Play Store and iTunes from Singapore can confirm that. They come individually, though—not as a whole package altogether. Therefore, you need to be updated about new games via their Facebook Page here.

These games are free, and Sega earns from ads and in-game purchases. You can pay to play the ad-free version. This initiative is called SEGA Forever; take a look at their trailer here:

That last part, when someone shouted “Sega”, is Sega’s trademark when they advertised their games or consoles in the 90s.

Someone reviewed the games and here’s his review:

  • The ads aren’t that intrusive
  • Ad banners don’t appear during gameplay – they only appear between levels
  • The graphics are great (not that the graphics in Mega Drive is any better)
  • Using a controller is much better

This could well be the best move by Sega so far.

I’ll be waiting for Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force. How about you?
