Read the headline? Yeah, that’s true.

This is not ranked by me, though I think Singapore is considered pretty safe, minus the stomping incident, scams and many amongst others.

The Safe Cities Index 2017 is a report that ranks 60 cities across 49 indicators covering digital security, health security, infrastructure security and personal security.

So my takeaway from this is that in all aspects of security, Singapore is top-notch. The report is very dry and I think even I try my best to paraphrase it, it’s still… boring.

So let me do some research to find out what constitutes a city or country as safe.

Low Crime Rates

That’s a given. Those who live in Singapore long enough can vouch for this. You don’t witness a lot of criminal activity, or find yourself a victim of crime THAT often.

We can’t say that it is non-existent but compared to other countries, we are better off so be thankful.

Breaking and entering, burglary, and other property crimes are also increasingly uncommon. According to InterNations, Singapore experienced a 20.3% drop in these forms of crime between 2014 and 2015.

Severe Penalties For ‘Offences’

Littering, jaywalking, eating in public transportation, or smoking at certain places may not be a serious issue overseas but for Singapore, it’s a no-no.

We do what we do best – collect money a.k.a fines.

Go ahead and spit in any public place in Singapore — including coffee shops, markets, eating houses, schools, theaters, public buildings, omnibuses, or public roads — and you’ll be greeted with a fine of up to $1,000.

Or what about jaywalking? Hmm, guilty as charged. You may receive a $20 fine on the spot, a fine of up to $1,000, or in more serious cases, three months of jail time. 

The punishment doubles to a fine of up to $2,000 and six months in jail if you’re caught jaywalking twice.

Hmm, time to re-look at my walking habits.

Infamous Trait: Corporal and Capital Punishment

You will meet the devil who loves caning.

A flexible cane of 1.2 meters in length and 1.2 cm in diameter is used to administer a maximum of 24 strokes on the bare buttocks of the offender (for male delinquents under the age of 50).

There are over 30 different forms of crime in Singapore which can incur caning, including drug abuse, possession of weapons, kidnapping, robbery, sexual abuse, rioting, or even overstaying a visa for more than 90 days.

I didn’t know Singapore was so strict on its laws. And yet, we are ranked the 2nd safest city. Who claims the number one spot?
