Disciplining your child is one thing, but how far is too far?

This question in Singapore society is almost akin to the “egg-and-chicken, which comes first?” riddle that has baffled many people smarter than us for many years.

Do you cane your kid in hopes he’ll be a better person next time? Or do you spare the rod and spoil the child?

For the man we’re going to talk about next, he obviously believes in tough love. Sort of.

S’porean Father Hits 10-Year-Old Son, Causing Serious Injury

This incident happened back on 28 May 2015 at around 10.15 pm.

–Just a bit of context before we carry on.–

The man’s marriage with his wife has deteriorated faster than Singapore’s 3D printing miracle, Pirate 3D, some years back and they were undergoing divorce proceedings at that time.

The couple sleeps in separate rooms, with the 10-year-old boy sharing the room with his mother.

–Okay, back to the story.–

On that day, the man had scolded his son for unsatisfactory results in school in the afternoon.

That night, he had a few drinks before he went up to the mother and son’s bedroom to discuss their son.

The boy overheard their conversation and decided he couldn’t take it anymore.

“You like that woman more than us. Why do you care for us so much?” He confronted his father.

It was revealed by the man’s lawyer, Mr Ravinderpal Singh, that the boy continued to “taunt” his father about an alleged “China mistress”.

Alleged because the court papers did not reveal if he really had a mistress or not.

And it all went to hell from there

After the boy repeated his remark, the man couldn’t take it lying (or sitting) down anymore.

He got up and started beating on the 10-year-old boy.

He kicked him in the face and body.

Even when the boy was lying on the ground trying to defend himself with two hands, the man continued his assault.

His then-wife attempted to shield her son with her own body and was kicked in the back according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Kong Kuek Foo.

Then, he pushed her away, resulting in her knocking into a vase and safe.

Continued Punching At His Son’s Face

The man continued punching away at his son’s face after hearing the 10-year-old boy using an expletive.

The maid of the family witnessed the incident and alerted the police.

The man was arrested at the scene.

The boy was sent to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital where it was revealed that he suffered extensive injuries, including a fracture to his right eye socket and a bruised forehead.

Boy Is Rude, A Liar & A Thief

While the prosecutor had asked for a sentence of 15 months in jail, Mr Ravinderpal Singh (the man’s lawyer) requested for the lowest possible sentence.

He said that his client had “snapped”.

That and the boy is “generally a disrespectful young boy involved in unhealthy habits such as lying and stealing”, according to the man’s sister.

The man originally claimed trial to the offence but decided to plead guilty on the first day of the trial.

Is it just me or do you have the image of a lawyer telling his client to plead guilty so that he can get a lower sentence?

Look, this is an airtight case and I’ll be honest with you, I can’t help much. BUT I can get you a lower sentence. Just say “guilty” to everything and act remorseful. I’ll do the rest.

He is sentenced to a year’s jail on 7 September 2017 (Thursday) and is currently out on bail of $20,000.

And get this, he might appeal against his sentence.

Is one year too lenient for him? Let us know in the comments!
