S’porean Indie Band On a Budget Sang China Wine & It’s Better Than The Original $2.4m Version

If you’re not familiar with the song ‘China Wine’, it’s performed by Sun Ho (the wife of jailed Pastor Kong Hee), and features the likes of Wyclef Jean and The Elephant Man. Sorry, who?

Anyway, check it out. It’s not bad.

Not that bad, I mean.

Anyway, the music video production cost an estimated amount of S$2.4 million, with Wyclef Jean pocketing a heft paycheck of $1.9m to produce it, and $500,000 to sweep her albums off the shelves after they ‘bombed’.

Not too shabby of an amount, considering the number of views, likes and dislikes of the video on the Youtube site.

Honestly, the song is so catchy it should be kept off the radar, so that unaware listeners wouldn’t get addicted to it.

However, good songs are just not prepared to die. Just look at Rebecca Black’s “Friday”. And erm, Justin Bieber’s “Baby”. They will always get covers, remixes and all sorts of renditions that somehow sound like the original, but maybe just a bit better.

“China Wine” is no different.

Rocking that cover

Stopgap’s the latest to cover this viral hit, and man…

They absolutely smashed that wine.

In fact, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that they turned that bottle on its tip, and inserted a refreshing new taste into it.

Have a listen!

The old version was good enough. Take two half-assed clubbing tracks, mesh them together, get a woman drunk on wine, a China-loving lyricist, two rappers that like to stare at asses, and you got China Wine.

The cover, while lacking the totally relevant parts of dancing women and pervy gazes, gives off a chill, soothing vibe I never would have thought possible, seeing how the original content was so funky and unique.

They’ve actually released their debut album, and some tracks are available on their Youtube channel!

Check them out; you won’t regret it.

The Singaporean music scene sure is booming, and I must say that as a Singaporean and a music fan, I’m real proud and excited for it.

You know how the Spanish had the viral hit, ‘Despacito’?

Maybe one day, we will have one of our own.

Well, granted, Sun Ho did have some tracks that reached Billboard’s No. 1 before.

But well, that’s all in the past.

And you know what they say: the future’s the way.

So do us proud, guys! Make the little red dot visible on the map, even in the Music scene!
