Back in February 2018, Subway indicated its interest in getting halal certified, and some of their outlets stopped serving pork.

Well, it seems that they’re now prepared to go all out.

Yesterday (21 March), Subway announced on their Facebook page they’ve started a Halal certification process.

And that all outlets in Singapore will be serving only non-pork protein with immediate effect.

Cue mass panic.

HDB ‘Golden Artist’ Back At It Again, This Time Hanging Gold Flags

Image: straitstimes.com

Remember her?

She became known last year for her artwork at the stairs of an HDB block in Jalan Rajah in Balestier.

Image: straitstimes.com

Back then, Miss Priyageetha Dia did not obtain permission from the town council before proceeding.

She had to remove the artwork. The town council appreciates her artistic talent and hoped to work together with her in the future.

Fast forward one year later, and Miss Priyageetha is at it again.

And just like before, she did not obtain approval before doing her art in public spaces.

She hung gold flags from all 24 levels of Block 108 Jalan Rajah on 18 Mar.

Three days later, the flags were removed by the town council.

Residents complained that the flag looked too much like joss paper, which is inauspicious to the Chinese.

Dr Lily Neo, an MP for Jalan Besar GRC, said that an “HDB block is a common space shared by people with different views on what art is, especially when it comes to cultural sensitivities”.

She mentioned that the town council is keen to work with her to display her art in other spaces like wall murals or other sites.

Again, Miss Priyageetha expressed her interest in working together with the town council as well.

You know what they say, right? The name determines how seriously you’re going to be taken.

If your Christian name is Rambu and your surname is Tan, forget about being respected #SorryOldJoke

Apparently, that’s what the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) think as well, and they’re rebranding themselves.

As the Singapore Premier League (pretty sure it has nothing to do with English Premier League, eh?).

Image: straitstimes.com

They’re hoping that this will bring new life into the Singapore football scene, focusing on four different areas:

  • Become a premium platform for aspiring players, with youth development as the key focus
  • Raise professional level by helping coaches, clubs, officials and players improve their competencies
  • Increase sustainability by being attractive to sponsors
  • Build a vibrant football culture by getting clubs to be more connected to the local community

They hope that they’ll make the rebranding more than just a change of name.

The SPL matches will be played on the weekends at 5.30 pm with pre-match entertainment in hope of increasing viewership in the stadiums.

Basically, the Singapore Premier League will be for Singaporeansby Singaporeans.

Private-hire Drivers Who Killed Man in Accident Asked For Advice Online, Gets Burned By Netizens Instead

The internet is both a wondrous and horrible space.

When you need help and don’t know where to turn to, you can post online asking for advice.

Then again, you stand a risk of getting burned. Badly.

Image: quickmeme.com

Like this guy.

On 27 Jan, a driver knocked down a man in an accident along Tiong Bahru road.

His car was confiscated by the TP for investigation, and his rental company demanded $4,300 as compensation for the damages.

To make matter worse, he can’t get a new car if he doesn’t pay the charges, and the rental company is still charging him the daily rental.

So he went online to ask for advice.

Only to get burn very. Very. Badly.

TL; DR: You knocked down a human being and all you care about it your own money? What about the old man?

And to make matter worse, someone else who knew the victim personally commented as well.

The uncle mentioned was allegedly a young man.

And he has already passed away from the accident.

Remember, even if it’s online, tact is still required.

It’s like you’re at your friend’s grandmother funeral, and you comment that the food tastes bad.

Woman Claims GrabHitch Driver Molested Her, Only To Be Shamed Online

Since we’re on the topic of online post and comments, here’s one more.

A Singaporean woman wrote about her GrabHitch experience in a public Facebook post.

She claimed that she was molested by her GrabHitch driver.

The driver touched her thighs while she was asleep, waking her up. Even after she pushed him away, he allegedly continued to do so, saying that she was “too hard to resist”.

Just like any other stories, netizens are divided into different camps.

There are those who think it’s her own fault..

If you cheapo get cheap service, you don’t blame anyone for this happening

Wow.

Another blamed her for taking the front seat.

The driver in question claimed that it was all a misunderstanding.

The woman has lodged a police report about the incident.

Grab has suspended the driver and are ready to assist the police in their investigations.

Grab Will Remove ComfortDelgro Cabbies From JustGrab, But Made Clear That They Haven’t Given Up

From now on, you will not be able to get a ComfortDelgro cab from the JustGrab service on Grab app anymore.

The company has removed the cabbies from the service after a warning letter served by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

However, ComfotDelgro cabs can still be called on their metered Taxi service (GrabTaxi).

Cabbies can only accept flat fares set by third-party apps if endorsed by their taxi company.

This means that for ComfortDelgro cabbies, they’re only allowed to accept flat fare bookings from their own company or Uber (you know, UberFlash?).

Grab, however, has not given up. They said that cabbies, as self-employed individuals, should be given the option of joining any platform and improve their livelihood, instead of being constrained by corporate arrangements.

National Taxi Association executive secretary Ang Hin Kee agreed with that.

“Cabbies are not employed by the taxi operators and only rent their vehicles from the firms so placing too many restrictions on their choices would make it seem like an employee-employer relationship.”

SMU Students Must Have Overseas Exposure To Graduate Successfully

From Aug 2018, students enrolling in SMU must attain some form of overseas exposure before they can graduate from their course.

Image: todayonline.com

Overseas exposure refers to international exchange programmes, overseas community projects, overseas study missions, international CCA competitions or performances, and overseas internships.

In order to make overseas exposure more accessible for students, the university is in talks with companies who have overseas subsidiaries, and look to expand their SMU-X partnerships.

In SMU-X, students work in team projects to tackle real challenges faced by organisations.

“SMU-X Overseas projects will give students a realistic experience working with partners abroad, and/or managing regional and global projects in the future workplace.”

They plan to “offer SMU-X Overseas modules in Laos, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.”

The university is also ready to offer support to students who are financially unable to go for overseas activities.

It believed that in today’s increasingly connected world, global exposure is required to succeed in today’s workplace.

Quite true, actually. We might have less strawberries with this, you know.

Changi Airport Voted No. 1 Airport in the World For The Sixth Time

On 22 Mar, Changi Airport was announced to be the best airport in the world, chosen by travellers.

Image: channelnewsasia.com

This is the first time that an airport has clinched the title six times consecutively, showing how popular it is with international travellers.

13.73 million people from more than 100 countries took part in the survey and there are more than 500 airports worldwide taking part in the competition.

The survey evaluates a traveller’s experience across KPIs like check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration all the way to departure at the gate.

“Changi Airport is very focused on making the airport experience comfortable and convenient, and continues to innovate with new product and service features,” Skytrax’s Mr Plaisted said.

Guess that’s why the Changi Airport Group (CAG) and the Government are willing to risk it all for T5, huh?

Physiotherapist Sentenced To Jail & Caning For Molesting Client

Image: straitstimes.com

When you go to an expert, you implicitly trust them not to screw you over.

Unfortunately, there are always bad eggs in every industry. Like this guy.

On 25 Mar 2017, an 18-year-old girl visited The Rehab Physio Practice in Delfi Orchard for a session because she had hip and back pain. She was with a friend.

The owner and physiotherapist, Luke Manimaran Degarajoo, attended to her.

Her friend waited for her outside the room while she was undergoing the treatment.

She was told to remove her top and to loosen her shorts by Luke. She complied because she thought it was part of the treatment.

He rolled down her shorts and underwear during the massage and touched her inappropriately.

Her friend glanced into the room and was shocked to see her friend in the nude.

After leaving the practice, the girl confided in her friend and lodged a police report four hours later.

Luke was sentenced to 11 months’ jail and three strokes of the cane. He is currently on bail to settle some personal issues and will report to the State Courts on 20 Apr to start his sentence.
