Taiwan’s DotS Has Started Airing & It Looks So Same-Same But Different

So back in May, my boss wrote about the upcoming Taiwanese drama The Best Choice (最好的選擇).

It’s basically a Taiwanese take on the worldwide phenomenon ‘Descendants of the Sun’ and was actually the brainchild of Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence.

Seeing how the Korean military drama boosted the morale and image of the South Korean military, Taiwan wants to replicate it too and tasked award-winning director Liang Hsu-shen to helm a Taiwanese version.

The show will be airing on mainstream TV channels, but for the international viewers interested in how it’s like, don’t fret. It will also be streamed on Facebook so you can pry to your heart’s content.

The drama was slated to start airing on 2 September 2017 but the full episodes are not yet out on the Facebook Page, leading us to believe that the episodes could take some time to reach the Facebook Page.

There was, however, a short episode that somewhat showcased what the show had to offer.

昨天沒能在首映會看到精彩片花的粉絲們~福利來溜!雖說只有20分鐘但是過程真是驚喜連連都要忘了眨眼哈哈快來看看這些精彩片段吧!P.S 抱緊緊的好sweeeeet <3

Alright, time for a user-friendly review!

The first thing that struck me? It actually shares more similarities with our recent locally produced drama, ‘When Duty Calls’, rather than ‘Descendants of the Sun’.

I mean, just compare the intros.

Even the singers have a similar vibe!

And the erm, budget.

You can tell straight away that the Taiwanese drama wasn’t exactly filmed on a movie-scale budget.

And it turns out to be true; the drama was made with SGD$600,000. ‘Descendants of the Sun’, on the other hand, had a monstrous SGD$15 million to work with.

While the budget of ‘When Duty Calls’ wasn’t disclosed, it can be expected to be closer to SGD$600,000 than SGD$15 million as well.

Alright, there are some similarities between it and the original.

For one, both the leads are strikingly good-looking and have a charismatic vibe around them.

And they make pretty flashy entrances too. The scene where Song Joong Ki flipped Song Hye Kyo’s phone in a casual way became a cult classic…

and here in this Taiwanese take, the lead stops his female co-star’s scooter when it was just about to crash. (The Taiwanese scene will make you cringe a bit though)

For two, there’s a light-hearted vibe surrounding the drama, which if you’re familiar with DotS folklore you will know that it can switch 180 degrees real fast.

So I suppose you can expect some cool and dangerous moments (it’s a copy of DotS after all).

For three, the second female leads in both dramas look prettier than the main female leads too. (Just my opinion. Don’t blast me, Song Hye Kyo fans)

I suppose there’s more, but we would have to watch more episodes to find out!

Thoughts

Honestly, I wouldn’t follow this Taiwanese remake, because the original would always be the best.

But for fans eager to see a reincarnation of Big Boss and Dr Kang’s romantic relationship, I think you’ll like it.

Here’s the official Facebook Page for the drama.
