Tomorrow (5 Sept) is the 凶-est Day of the Hungry Ghost Festival. Here’s What You Should Know

Okay, granted that it’s 2017 and people are downloading apps to communicate with ghosts, buying kim zua online and even 3D printing everything, but there would always be a person in your group who believes in the supernatural.

Especially this month. Or to be even more specific, especially tomorrow (5 September 2017).

If you Google for Hungry Ghost Festival, you’ll see that there’s an exact date for the festival.

Wait, isn’t it supposed to be a month-long thingy?

Yes and no.

According to beliefs, the gates of hell are open for the entire seventh month, so ghosts would roam the earth freely. As the ghosts might disturb people, offerings are made so that they would toe the line.

The entire seventh month is from 22 August 2017 to 19 September 2017.

However, there is a huge significance on the 15th of the seventh month, which falls on 5 September 2017.

While the first and last day of the festival are equally importantly, the mid-month, which is the 15th, is commonly known as the real “Hungry Ghost Festival”, whereby people make offerings as well.

Here’s why: it’s believed that after two weeks, the ghosts are hungry again, so unless people make offerings again, they would get angry and disturb the living.

Once that is done, it supposedly pleases the ghosts and they won’t harm the living.

If you intend to stay out late tomorrow, do remember this: there might be super hungry ghosts roaming around earth. Just make sure you know the taboos, and if possible, sleep early.

After all, Wednesday is a weekday. Why the hell (pun intended) would you stay out late?
