Top 8 Korean snacks that are more than daebak

Korean food has taken over the culinary scene in Singapore by storm! From street snacks to high end dining, you can find traces of Korean influence in almost every corner of Singapore. Because they are mostly rather affordable, having Korean food has become a way of life for many people, young and old alike.

Here are my top 8 Korean snacks for when you are feeling peckish for something from the land of kimchi and K-pop idols. Do you agree?

 

Tteokbokki snack anyone?

Not very commonly seen here but there is this really tasty and sweet, spicy snack you just have to try if you do see it. For those of you who are not aware, tteokbokki is actually rice cake cut up into small cylindrical shapes and are usually boiled or pan fried, and eaten over drinks. This snack makes it so much easier for anyone to enjoy almost authentic tteokbokki without the hassle of cooking it.

Yanggaeng

Or red bean snack for the rest of you. As it is, this snack looks almost like a bar of chocolate or jelly. Only when you have bitten into it do you realise that it is a sweet snack made up of red beans, sugar and flour, almost like our nian gao if you think about it but with red beans. The texture is chewy too so I bet if you enjoy your nian gao, you may like this.

A Butter Waffle so good…

It will make you melt like one. Much loved by many foreigners who visit Korea, this butter waffle packs a buttery punch without the grease for all those who are lucky enough to try it. Just thinking about it now is making my mouth water.

Pepero

You know those biscuit sticks coated with awesome dippings? Yep that’s the one. Everyone is going gaga over these flavourful sticks so much that it has made it to the top 10 favourite Korean snacks list.

Choco Pie

If you are a fan of our local version called Lotte, you will know how these taste and look like. Two mini pieces of cake with a delicious cream filling in the centre. An awesome perk me up in the middle of a sleepy work day.

Shrimp Crackers

Also known as saeoo snek in Korean, these crackers are a hoot. Best paired with beer or shoju, these tasty morsels are not too greasy or heavy on your palate, making it super easy to finish off a pack in no time at all.

Onion Rings

Loosely translated as yangpa in Korean, these rings of awesomeness are packed full of zesty onion flavour and (surprise, surprise!), contain no MSG! This is possibly the best way to snack and still not feel the guilt.

Choco Heim

These chocolate-filled snacks looks like the Apollo biscuits 90s kids used to go crazy over in the past. A definite must-try for the uninitiated.
