Wah! Now you can choose which vocation you want to go to even before you enlist

For guys who has served in NS before, you’ll remember those pre-enlistment days, don’t you? You have to report to CMPB to do a series of tests including a psychometric assessment and a physical check up. Hell, you might even remember the painful process of drawing blood from you and how boring the psychometric assessment was you decide to anyhow do, even if you know it’ll determine the rest of your NS life.

Remember how back then, we were all hoping not to kena infantry because of the long marches nor do we hope to kena guards because of how siong it was? Yeah, those were the days.

Pre-enlistees, from next year onwards, you have something extra to look forward to. According to Straits Times, pre-enlistees from 2017 onwards will be allowed to indicate their interest in specific vocations they want to get into as part of the pre-enlistment process.

Defence Minister, Ng Chee Hen, said in a media interview that deployment will still depend on operational needs because some vocations will definitely be more popular than others.

Here are the top 8 vocations we think will be incredibly popular once this starts. Do you agree with us?

Music Drama Company (MDC)
The Music Drama Company in SAF is notorious for a couple of things: their performances and free food. For your 2-year NS liability, you get to train in your craft and perform in front of audiences (so no forests) and more often than not, you’ll get free food after your performances. Oh, did I mention that free food isn’t just cookhouse food, but sometimes restaurants and buffets too?

Drivers (Transport Operators)
For those who firmly believe in making the best use of their time, they’ll definitely want to get into this vocation. After all, not only do they get free food and lodgings, they get to have a free driving license as well! And they’ve also heard about what drivers do in the field: sleep like no tomorrow.

Air Force
The Air Force are known for a couple of things: they’re cool, have nice-looking ladies and most of the NSFs there are working on a 9-5 basis. How awesome is that? Very.

Commandoes
Some garang soldiers will still want in to these units because it proves that they are the best. I mean, look at this picture.

Clerks
Those who want to just lepak their way through NS will hope they get to be clerks instead of storemen. And clerks get to interact with the higher ranks because only these people get personal assistants.

Cooks
Now, before you shoot me with your non-existent SAR-21, hear me out. There are no NSF cooks here in Singapore, but this vocation exists in overseas bases. An average NSF cook earns more than an officer here in Singapore because their overseas allowance is pretty cray-cray. And there’s also a Catering training platoon trained to cook food to serve foreign dignitaries during events organised by the Army.

Singapore Police Force
And of course, there are a few who will request to transfer to SPF after their BMT because they seem to have a cushy life: no outfields, shift work (1 day, 1 night, 1 off) and you’re in civilisation. I bet you’ve requested for that before after your SIT test, right?

Ration Food Tester
If this exists, this is probably the best vocation to be in: paid to eat food? Hell, yeah! Unless you hate anything to do with army food, then it’ll probably be hell on earth for you.
