Woman Refused To Check In Overweight Bag On Scoot Flight, Caused 2 Hours Delay For Passengers

And get blasted for it too.

What happened?

On September 10, Scoot flight TR166 was due to depart at 2.45 am for the city of Shenyang.

Instead, it took off only two hours later and the delay affected around 300 passengers.

The reason? A woman had allegedly refused to check in her overweight carry-on baggage.

According to an affected passenger who had posted on social media, the conflict started because of the woman’s overweight luggage.

When the woman, who looked to be in her twenties and claimed to be a student, was inserting her luggage into the overhead compartment, she apparently said to a stewardess, “Am I wrong? So what if I’m wrong?”

The stewardess left without a word.

It turns out that the luggage was reportedly overweight, and the stewardess then returned and asked her to check it in.

She started arguing with the stewardess, but ultimately gave in with an apology.

Just when the passengers thought the case was closed, another stewardess came with a man in uniform five minutes later and requested for the woman to alight the plane.

Subsequently, an announcement was broadcast over the system, stating that a passenger had violated safety protocols and as a result was require to leave the flight.

However, assistance from the Police would be required, which caused the long delay.

After the Police arrived, the woman and her luggage were evicted, and the plane swiftly left.

Another passenger’s account was shorter and more concise: the woman had argued with a stewardess and the plane’s captain, despite the two asking her to cooperate. When they asked her what her luggage contained, she steadfastly refused to tell them.

For the other passengers’ safety, the captain thus requested for her to leave the flight.

Rules

According to a Scoot spokesman, “airline regulations dictate that each handheld luggage should not exceed 10kg”. 

The woman reportedly brought four pieces of luggage with her, and one of them actually weighed 30kg.

The Netizens were pretty critical in regards to the incident.

But if you look at it from another point of view, the woman wasn’t actually 100% at fault here.

Sure, she brought overweight bags with her, this despite the clear airline regulations. The fact that she argued with the stewardess seems to imply that she did know about the rule beforehand, but chose to ignore it.

That’s her fault.

After that, she did comply, no matter how begrudging the attitude she gave. She even allegedly apologised.

And then Scoot decides to stretch out matters. Yeah it’s for the passengers’ safety; I can understand that. But waiting for the police to arrive before you can take action isn’t really the woman’s fault.

From my stance, both parties were at fault for the passengers’ delay in flight. The woman was wrong for apparently ‘knowingly’ bringing the bags up, and Scoot was wrong for taking such a long time to complete an eviction procedure.

Maybe they just don’t want to be United Airlines, eh? No point evicting a passenger by force if all it gets for you is bad publicity. Gotta go the correct route about it.
