Singapore was ranked alongside with Paris as one of the most expensive cities to live in 2018 according to The Economist. Still, as locals will tell you, there are little ways to make your life better (and also more environmentally-friendly!) in Singapore.

Here are 10 according to this Reddit thread:

1) Rack up EZ-Link Card points for discounts

The top tip comes from Reddit user hazy_future: if you have an adult EZ-Link card, download the EZ-Link app and register your card to the app in order to rack up points when you tap your EZ-link card. The points can then be used to redeem things like Old Chang Kee curry puffs and even Zalora vouchers! Check out these 7 Bus Arrival Apps for you to beat the clock!

2) Lighten your loose change compartment

Too many loose coins in your wallet? If you want to lighten your load, Reddit user porgception suggests using one of the ubiquitous vending machines to help you out. Simply put 5 20-cent coins into a machine, hit refund, and voila – you’ll get a golden dollar back!

3) Raid the Value Dollar store for bargains

You might have noticed the Value Dollar Store or ABC store with its fire-sales banners. With tons of goodies going for very affordable prices, it’s a good place to stock up on European imported chocolates, or household cleaners that usually cost more in major grocery stores. We have Reddit user deathbrainzto thank for this tip.

4) Pay a one-way ride fare for 2 rides

If you’re a caregiver of a loved one in the hospital, you will want to ensure that we are able to see the patient regularly. However, working hours may interfere with patient visitation hours. There is a “main caregiver” card that allows caregivers all day access to the ward. Reddit user MissCreepyStories pointed this out; a great tip for those of us who may need to visit elderly patients in the hospital.

6) Ordering coffee at local coffee shops (or kopitiams) like a pro

This tip is good for caffeine addicts! Reddit user velvetmotel suggests telling your kopitiam barista to add ‘ti loh’ when you are buying iced coffee/tea, which translates to pour directly, so that the drink does not become diluted from the ice.
