4 tips for a long-distance relationship

It’s that time of the year again – university applications. Before you realize, everyone will be off to different schools in different countries, all embarking on an exciting new chapter in their lives.

But what happens when the one that’s leaving is your better half?

Long distance relationships ensue. I won’t deny that it’s easy to upkeep a long distance relationship. I personally am in a long distance relationship myself, and some times the distance gets hard. When you need someone to hug, you realize that your better half is miles away from you. You’ll soon come to the realization that your weekly dates are no longer weekly dates. You’ll feel the absence of your other half… and it does get hard.

Here are a few tips to keep that long distance relationship going until you get to meet again during summer vacation!

Go the old fashioned way – snail mail!
Snail mail, handwritten letters. These are things of the past. But writing a letter to your boyfriend or girlfriend studying overseas can be therapeutic. Putting pen to paper allows for you to unleash a deluge of words onto paper. Your other half will definitely feel the love and effort put in – and being miles away from home, it can be comforting to hold something that your girlfriend or boyfriend has put so much effort into doing. Also, the wait! The excitement of receiving a letter and seeing a letter in your mailbox is simply indescribable! It’s like a burst of happy dust inside your heart!

Skype dates
Skype and other video-calling platforms make it easy for you to keep in touch with your other half. Make a point to set aside some time every day to talk to each other. It may be for just a mere 15 minutes before the other goes to bed (time difference problems!), but keeping each other updated about your day doesn’t make the other party feel like you’ve been left out of his or her life. The both of you are still an integral part of each others’ lives, and of course, seeing each other at the end of a long and tiring day can be pretty uplifting!

Watch the same movies
Watching the same movie or television series will give you things to talk about – and there’s a sense of connection the both of you will have to the same television programme or movie. And you can watch movies over Skype! It’s not the same as cuddling on the couch and watching the movie together physically, but hey! You’ll take whatever you can get, right?

Count down the days till you meet again… together!
Nothing beats counting down the days till you meet again. It might seem long at the beginning, but as the numbers get smaller, you’ll feel much much better about it. And it’s amazing if you count down together! It lets your girlfriend or boyfriend know that you’re excited about seeing him or her and spending time with them again!

Being in a long distance relationship isn’t easy, but if both parties put in the same amount of effort in making the other feel loved, it does get easier. And as they always say – love triumphs all.
