5 places that serve the best chilli crab in Singapore

Some people might argue that chilli crab is the best crab dish, beating out its salted egg yolk and black pepper cousins. Who can disagree? The sauce goes well with rice and fried or steamed mantou and even children can appreciate chilli crab. Order one and it’ll probably be gone by the time you snap a few photos. Here are some places in Singapore that serve chilli crab so good, you’ll end up licking your fingers after you’re done eating.

Mellben Seafood
This inconspicuous seafood restaurant in Toa Payoh happens to serve one of the best chilli crab dishes in Singapore. Do arrive before 6pm if you hope to get a seat as the restaurant does not take reservations. Being located in the heartlands also means that you get a more relaxed dining atmosphere. If chilli crab isn’t your favourite dish, try the restaurant’s Butter Crab and Claypot Crab Bee Hoon instead.

Long Beach Seafood Restaurant
If chilli crab served at other seafood restaurants are too sweet for you, Long Beach Seafood Restaurant’s version will not disappoint. Its chilli crab dish is spicier than most and the quality of the restaurant’s crabs are almost always good. Do try their black pepper crab instead, if you’re ordering other dishes with a similar flavour profile to chilli crab.

Blue Lotus
Although the chilli crab served here looks like any other chilli crab served islandwide, the taste is anything but similar. Spices and herbs such as lemongrass and curry leaves are included in the sauce and fresh pomelo is showered on top to help quell the heat. You may end up liking this version more than any other local one.

Roland Restaurant
The restaurant serves a lighter version of the chilli crab dish, giving your palate and stomach a break, considering that you’ll be ordering other dishes throughout the course of your meal. If you’re a fan of the female crab’s roe,  you’re in for a treat too. Did you know that Roland Restaurant was the one that originally came up with the idea for chilli crab?
Address: 89 Marine Parade Central # 06 – 750, 440089

Mattar Road Seafood BBQ
The hawker centre stall takes two days off every week, not to rest, but to prepare the signature sauce for their chilli crab dish. Although this stinks up the whole hawker centre, no one complains and with good reason. Do try their barbecued stingray and white pepper crabs when you’re dining there too.
