I have always wondered why anybody would bother with staycations. To me, they seem pointless and lack that bit of excitement – the kind you get when you jet off in a plane with your luggage in tow.
It is as good as moving into a friend’s place to stay for the night, except more costly. Plus, with budget airlines and cheap guesthouses, flying off to a neighbouring country just seems like a better deal than a staycation.
1. Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok – one of the many holiday destinations Singaporeans enjoy flying off to and for good reason too!
Who can resist cheap shopping at Platinum Mall, Chatuchak Weekend Market, and the relatively new Asiatique Night Market? ‘Nuff said.
2. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
If you’re not into history and café hopping, then you best have a look at other travel destinations instead. Unbeknowst to most, Vietnam has a growing café culture like in Singapore and many of its cafés are often hidden in seluded backalleys or even underground – literally.
Don’t be surprised to find waiters in cafés telling you to not speak or not use your phones because some of these places are all about appreciating the slow pace of the city.
3. Macau, China
Apart from its neighbour Hong Kong, not much is said about Macau. It is a place renowned for its many casinos and the Venetian Hotel which the interior of Marina Bay Sands is roughly modelled after.
You need not stay at the Venetian Hotel unless you plan to go over budget since Macau has well-furnished hotels that go for $50 a night too! Shopping may not be that affordable there but the Portugese egg tarts sure are.
4. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Sure, some people might not think that going to Kuala Lumpur, or any part of Malaysia for that matter, actually counts as actual travelling since we are so near each other.
But hey, for such cheap air tickets or even a bus/train ride, who’s to complain? Kuala Lumpur is almost like Singapore, just two times as cheap.
5. Bali, Indonesia
Mmm, the sun, the sand, and all the hot bods in bikinis and board shorts – three things that signify you are on a beach vacation.
Wait, what’s next on our itinerary? Banana boating? Windsurfing? You can even choose not do a thing and relax in your private villa; it is all up to your discretion. It is a beach holiday after all.
