5 Ways to Keep Yourself Motivated Every Morning When Going to Work

Eat. Work. Sleep. Repeat. Such is the summary of a day in the life of a Singaporean millennial; in a fast-paced environment like ours, we never seem to have enough time to take a breather.

In aiming to meet the expectations of our bosses, colleagues, family members and ourselves, we may find it difficult to drag ourselves out of our comfortable beds in the wee hours of the morning to spend another day toiling ceaselessly at the office desk.

Here are some pointers to guide you towards having a fresh start daily and achieving greater levels of motivation and productivity at work.

Start the Day with Exercise

The Greeks produced some of history’s most renowned thinkers – Aristotle, Socrates, Plato, Pythagoras, the list goes on – but also believed in the importance of physical fitness in parity to mental and intellectual ability. From the Greek philosopher Thales came the saying ‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ which translates to a sound mind in a sound body.

Exercise in the morning allows for one to have a more alert mind, a boost in mood and metabolism as well as a conferred sense of accomplishment from clearing a hurdle at the start of the day. It is a tough change to make but an effective and rewarding one.

Wake Up 1-2 Hours Earlier

Many of us feel the inertia when dragging ourselves past the sheets before 7a.m. Nonetheless, making the effort to get out of bed one or two hours early is correlated with high levels of proactivity, efficient planning and sustained optimism throughout the day at work.

Moreover, an article on Forbes draws emphasis on the fact that this act will allow one to derive more time out of the fixed number of hours in the day for activities such as yoga, meditation or simply just reading a book.

Have a Good Breakfast

There are a multitude of documented studies demonstrating the benefits of having a good first meal of the day such as higher energy levels, better memory, lower cholesterol as well as a reduction in the risk of heart diseases and diabetes.

By increasing alertness and concentration during working hours, one is able to accomplish more in the fixed 8 hours of work thereby lowering the probability of having to do overtime or bringing work home. Consuming a healthy breakfast hence improves daily outlook and serves a great early motivator.

Maintain an Ordered Checklist

Long term goals can be broken down into smaller short term goals that can be realized in a shorter period of time. This allows one to monitor his or her progress towards achieving these longer term goals and thereby providing focus and determination for the day ahead.

In addition to this list, one should also actively maintain an ordered to-do one that is revised at the end of each day. List down all tasks and organize them according to priority. On the following day, ensure that the most tedious tasks are completed before moving on to the menial ones. This process of prioritization confers a sense of accomplishment from knowing that major hurdles were cleared earlier on in the day and grants more time in the evenings for other pursuits.

Useful productivity tools include Evernote and Trello.

Pick up a Progressive Hobby

This engenders a more positive outlook for the day ahead by keeping one motivated in striving towards non-work related achievements. It serves as an efficient avenue to de-stress at day end as a commitment with a longer time horizon.

In the light of a hectic schedule, it might be cumbersome for the young aspiring Singaporean millennial to face the morning sun with the same level of motivation every single day. The onus of making the daily commute to the office a little less dreadful is through tiny but sustained efforts. The above-mentioned points therefore serve as a guide for the individual who is willing to integrate small changes to the quotidian activities of his or her life with the end goal of heading to work in the days to come with a hint of a smile.
