Public holidays are rare. And that’s why you should treasure them.

#1 Sleep in, but not too late
It’s a public holiday and the first thing you should be doing is catching up on your sleep, since you probably won’t have enough of it in the first place anyway. Some people go on super long day trips that begin from 6am and finish at 10pm, but think about how tired you’ll be during the whole thing. Quality counts when it comes to spending your public holiday, you know! Sleep in a little, but not too much or you’ll end up wasting your entire morning. 8am/9am is a pretty good time to wake up.

#2 Make sure to include some activities YOU enjoy
A lot of people don’t do this enough…sure, public holidays means hanging out with some of your obligatory relatives/friends, but is that what YOU really want to be doing? If you’ve had enough of the hustle and bustle of work and all you want to do is to stay at home curled up with a good book, then by all means…do that. It’s your holiday.

#3 Pamper your body
And by that, I mean making sure you’re eating a decent meal (especially if you never have time to eat and ALWAYS live on take outs), having a good shower that involves shampooing your hair to your heart’s content, and doing a 10 minute exercise if your butt has been on a couch for half a year or so. Pampering your body means oiling the machine you’re living on to make sure it continues to stay healthy, so do it!

#4 Go out
If you’re always stuck in an office or at your university, you probably don’t have time to do anything else. By “going out” I don’t mean making yourself do a 2 hour trek up a hill or forcing yourself to go on a raging tour, but having a day off means you can at least visit one of your favourite places, or even a new place if you’re adventurous like that. If you like shopping, then visit some shops – and if you like eating, then visit that restaurant that you’ve never visited before. Get walking; get exploring.

#5 Re-connect with an old friend
And of course, this depends on how many friends you have and how much of a socialite you wish to be. Re-connecting with an entire class of old friends can be tiring, but just one or two wouldn’t hurt. Instead of going out with someone you see all the time, why not catch up with someone you haven’t seen in a while? The experience will be more memorable that way, not to mention you guys won’t run out of things to talk about.

#6 …And sleep early
Because the next day, you’re going to have to work. Again.
