Taiwan has a reputation as the land of the friendliest people in the whole world. If you have ever been to Taiwan, you will be pleasantly shocked at how different it is from Singapore.
Although they are not as well-developed economically, the people there seem a lot happier than us and welcome tourists with open arms too. If you have never been to Taiwan, you should really do these things when you go there next time!
Release lanterns into the night sky
This is one thing that many people go to Taiwan for, especially after watching the movie “Apple of My Eyes” where the main couple released a lantern at Pingxi together.
Soak in a hot spring
Taiwan has numerous natural hot water springs all around the country, so stop at a hot spring resort or hotel and soak in the waters. If you are on a budget or looking for a more communal/local experience, join the elderly Taiwanese at the public hot springs. It’s a far cry from the one we have at Sembawang.
Visit one of their ornate temples
Taiwan has some of the most elaborate and impressive Chinese temples in the world. Even the non-famous ones like 鹿耳门 are worth a visit despite being located in rural areas, which I discovered by accident when I was there.
Drive around Taroko Gorge
Hire a driver to bring you around. You will definitely spot many gorgeous sights along the way, with the deep valleys and tall cliffs you can feast your eyes on to your heart’s content.
Climb a mountain and watch the sunrise
Hehuanshan and Alishan are the two main spots for watching amazing sunrises. Although the temperature would be near freezing at the top, especially in winter, it’s all worth it when you see the sun peek out from behind the fog and clouds. If you love waking up early to watch the sunrise, you’ll definitely want to watch them here!
View the sun setting over the sea horizon
Taiwan has many beaches and the Qixingtan beach is a famous beach. Although the beach has rocks and pebbles instead of a sandy shore, the amazing view there is bound to blow you away (pun intended, as it is really windy).
Eat and shop at the night markets
Every Taiwanese city has its own night markets and city specialities. Settle both your dinner and supper cheaply and deliciously there – you’ve never been to Taiwan if you never did this!
Even if you aren’t into extreme sports, para-gliding offers a fantastic experience and view of the Taiwan landscapes. Not to mention it’s a once in a lifetime (possibly) experience, right?
