9 Activities in Chinatown to Bask in the CNY 2019 Festivities

Chinese New Year is yet again just around the corner, and we excited for all the feasting, family reunions, ang pows and gambling. Aside from that, we also look forward to heading down to Chinatown to soak in all the festivities.

With a line up of exciting events during the Chinese New Year period, get revved up for a colourful, fun-filled new year with your family and loved ones!

1) Chinatown Walking Trail

Date: 26 & 27 January, 2 & 3 February 2019 (Saturday & Sunday)
Time: 3.30 – 5 pm
Meeting Point: Information Booth in front of the stage at Kreta Ayer

Take a walk down Chinatowns walking trail and learn more about its rich culture and heritage. Each trail is free and conducted in either English or Mandarin. It covers different parts of Chinatown such as Kreta Ayer Road, Sago Street, Pagoda Street as well as New Bridge Road. With this years theme being “Celebration of Abundance and Prosperity”, the streets will be decorated and lit with gorgeous lights and decor which make for great photo opportunities as well.

2) Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2019 Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony

Date: 20 January 2019 (Sunday)
Time: 6 – 10 pm
Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

The Official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony marks the opening of the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations for 2019. Each and every year, the event never fails to leave visitors in awe with its entertaining performances by both local and overseas leading performing troupes. Together with spectacular firecrackers and fireworks display, this ceremony is the perfect way to usher in the Year of the Pig.

3) Chinatown Street Light-Up

Date: 20 January – 6 March 2019
Time: 7 pm – 2 am (Fri & Sat), 7 pm – 12 am (Sunday – Thursday), 7 pm – 6 am (4 & 5 February 2019)
Venue: Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road, South Bridge Road and Garden Bridge

The official Light-Up and Opening Ceremony will be followed by 6 weeks of street light-ups along the streets of Chinatown. The light-up will feature gorgeous handmade sculptured lanterns of Pigs, flowers and greetings. Combining traditions with modern design, visitors will be enthralled and captivated by the beautiful and mesmerizing lights that are definitely a feast for the eyes as well as a great photo taking opportunity!

4) Festive Street Bazaar

Date: 18 January – 4 February 2019
Time: 6 – 10.30 pm (Daily), 6 pm – 1 am (Chinese New Year’s Eve)
Venue: Pagoda Street, Smith Street, Sago Street, Temple Street and Trengganu Street

With a variety of exciting stalls lining up the streets of Chinatown, visitors can feast on scrumptious New Year delicacies, enjoy the brilliant lights and decorations of the stalls and shop for the New Year traditional goodies such as cookies, decorative items, waxed duck and preserved fruits, clothing and even potted plants! There is definitely something for everyone this new year.

5) Nightly Stage Shows

Venue: Kreta Ayer Square

6) Chinatown Wishing Tree

Date: 15 January – 3 February 2019
Time: 11 am – 9 pm
Venue: Chinatown Point

Make all your New Year wishes come true at the Chinatown Wishing Tree this Chinese New Year! Write wishes for yourself and your loved ones on the “Make a Wish” card and hang them on the banyan tree. Besides that, you will also be playing a part in helping the needy elderly every time you make a wish. Each wishing card costs $2/- and all proceeds will be donated to the Kreta Ayer Seniors‘ Activity Centre.

7) 12th International Lion Dance Competition

Date: 26 January 2019 (Saturday)
Time: 6.30 – 10.30 pm
Venue: Kreta Ayer Square
Price: $10 per person

How can we celebrate Chinese New Year without a breathtaking lion dance performance? From the rhythmic beat of the drums to the jaw-dropping stunts, there’s just something about the lion dance that evokes a sense of awe and majesty. To catch the lively performances, head over to the open carpark at Banda Street to witness the power and strength of the ‘King of the Lions’ over an intense competition!

This annual event which is already into its 12th year will see numerous reputable top lion dance troupes from Singapore and Asia Pacific who are all vying for the grand prize and the honour of being recognised as the best. This is definitely a showdown that you will not want to miss!

8) Chinatown Chinese New Year Countdown Party

Date: 4 February 2019 (Monday)
Time: 9.30pm – 12.30am
Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

Usher in the Year of the Pig with live performances and a rousing countdown celebration with your favourite MediaCorp artistes in the heart of Chinatown. Be entertained by the lively performances and take part in interactive games as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks.

9) Chingay 2019 @ Heartlands

Date: 17 February 2019 (Sunday)
Time: 6 – 10 pm
Venue: New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street

And who can forget the famous Chingay parade? Chingay is the annual largest street performance and float parade in Asia and once again, it is making an appearance in Chinatown to mark the end of the Chinese New Year Celebrations with a bang. Join us with your family and friends for a vibrant, fun-filled night that includes special performances by local and overseas performers as well as 10 beautifully decorated and lighted floats.
