Japan is notorious for coming up with one of the best inventions, ever. Sushi, ramen, MENTAIKO, banana casings, manga, Super Mario (shout-out to Nintendo) and robots even. The country is also home to some of the most breath-taking scenery all year round, putting it at the top of the list for highly visited countries annually. Image: giphy.com Going back to the topic of sushi, one of the best parts of the sushi experience is watching the chefs prepare it right before your eyes. I was blessed to be able to witness this on my recent visit to Japan and let me tell you - it was life-changing. My friends always said that you'd avoid sushi after holidaying in the Land of the Rising Sun but there's some truth to that. My mum aside, I know of no one that dislikes eating sushi. I'm just glad that taste isn't passed down genetically because my love for this Japanese dish knows no boundaries. As much as I enjoy consuming sushi, a good one is pretty pricey in Singapore; that's why I only treat myself on special occasions. But sushi doesn't always have to burn a hole in your wallet. If you're looking for sushi that's not as damaging to your wallet, Sushi Express offers an array of sushi, sashimi and desserts at a price point of S$1.50++ per plate. It will be held across two sessions; 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm on weekdays only, with a maximum of five participants each session. There will be a registration fee of S$20, which is refundable if you manage to devour 90 plates of sushi. Otherwise, it would be deducted from your final bill. You heard me, you'd have to pay for the plates if you're unable to consume at least 90 plates. Contenders are required to finish the most number of plates of sushi within the stipulated 50 minutes. The Grand Champion walks away with S$200 worth of cold hard cash, trophy, T-shirt and a certificate to attest your victory.
