We all have gained one valuable thing from national service

Let’s just do a simple experiment, shall we? I’m certain there’s someone beside you who have once served two years of national service, or are going to serve soon. Ask him what he has lost or will lose during the two years. You’ll most likely get these answers:

Time.

Money.

Freedom.

Youth.

To us, while we learn many new things, it is, to some extent, a waste of two years. No matter how much we try to justify, it will be two years of opportunity cost, for we can learn just as much in civilian world as well should we have the discipline.

But there’s one thing that we realize we can never, ever learn in the civilian world if we continue to think this way.

Just watch this video.

Only when we’ve experienced a loss that we learn one powerful lesson: to cherish.

You only cherish when you’ve lost something.

And if you think this applies only to male Singaporeans and Singapore PRs, think again. You’re always losing something. It’s just a matter of whether you will grow to cherish what you have now instead of complaining about the loss.

It’s your choice.
