Lady Gaga famously sung “I guess sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read” in her 2013 hit single ‘Applause’. That has never rung truer for those of us who… well, like to read, so scroll down to find out what are the best things to do at these 8 libraries in Singapore.

1) Best library to study: National Library / Lee Kong Chian Reference Library

The National Library, as its name implies, is the flagship library of Singapore. It is the biggest library in Singapore, with a floor area of 60,000 square metres across 13 floors at Bugis. Its sheer size houses many books and study spaces, making it perfect for you to finish that paper or thesis you’ve been procrastinating on. It also has the largest general collection. The Lee Kong Chian Reference Library (located at levels 7 to 13), is dedicated specifically for reference material, where you can find the latest issues of companies’ annual reports or request for books from the Repository Used Book Collection.

If you need to finish your assignment or thesis, the National Library is the best place to do it because of its numerous study spaces, large collection of reference and central location.

However, its central location might work against you if you come at the wrong hour because study spaces are occupied quite quickly so come early.

Its swanky, minimalist interior lets you feel your “design & lifestyle” oats, while its design-and-lifestyle-oriented book collection allow you to unwind in relative silence compared to the streets below.

The studio, which is the first level, contains a magazine wall as well as a general collection of books and audio materials, whereas the loft, the second level, contains four book trees branching into topics about People, Space, Product and Visual Design.

If you’re lucky you can catch design and lifestyle related workshops that happen on the open area at the studio level.

This is a library that you can get the beat dropping because it has its own rehearsal studio! It is divided in 4 “villages” focusing on different aspects of performing arts: Dance, Film, Music, Theatre. The real highlight, though, is the Silent Studio (pictured). As its name implies, patrons outside of the studio would be hard pressed to hear anything, while the jammers inside will be able to jam to their heart’s content. Everybody wins!

We’ve often waited for tomorrow for a meal with our family. But what if tomorrow never comes? Watch this and you'll understand:

Do note that you have to book the studio in advance, and that it comes at different rates depending on the time of the week.

It is the first library in Singapore to offer a dedicated Teens Library service called ‘Verging All Teens (V.A.T.)’, a library created for teens by teens, to inspire teens, which entails graphic novels and comics of various genres. It also hosts open-mic gigs and performances.
