Yay, instant noodles! Be it cup or packet, aren’t they the favourite for students and young people? Especially when you’re pulling an all-nighter and the only thing you can really cook is instant noodles. But every time after you eat it, guilt overcomes you. There is always this voice in your head saying “junk food…” and “You will die eating this”. But today, we’re not going to answer “are cup noodles bad?”. Instead, we’re going to talk about “is drinking the soup in cup noodles bad for you?”
All our life, we’ve been told that the soup in instant noodles is super unhealthy because of the sodium, MSG and preservatives. That’s what everyone has been saying – the media, our parents and even we come to believe in it.
But, have you ever questioned the validity of the claims that it is unhealthy even once?
Here’s the truth to it.
Is The Soup In Cup Noodles Bad For You?
Firstly, let’s take a look at the noodles itself. Most of us soak the noodles in boiling water and just put the seasoning into the water. Rumour has it that we should pour away the first boil because the noodles are oily and they may contain wax and other preservatives which actually go into the water.
If you drink the water directly, or rather, “instant noodle soup”, you’re also absorbing all those things. That is pretty much the truth. Just keep in mind that technology is advancing and companies are coming up with healthier options that don’t require the noodles to be fried.
Next, the sodium found in the soup seasoning is really high and exceeds the daily amount that you’re supposed to take.
A common argument is often about MSG. Many think that MSG has like 10 times the amount of sodium than anything and everything else.
Let me tell you this: MSG only has 1/3 the amount of sodium found in table salt, which is the salt we normally consume and use for cooking. Unless the seasoning has separate amounts of sodium, it may very well be healthier than normally seasoned food that you take away for your dinner.
Honestly, MSG can be found in many other kinds of food especially your snacks and even soy sauce.
Scientifically, no research has ever proven to link MSG to side effects such as headaches.
