The release of a new iPhone never fails to draw a ton of speculation and hype about how different the new features are going to be.
Remember when we heard that the iPhone 7 might not have a headphone jack and people thought it was too crazy to be true?
Well, look what happened.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the original iPhone, which was released in 2007. With a new model scheduled for release soon, there have been rumours circulating about what new and groundbreaking technology will be featured on this phone, or what old features will be completely revamped away in honor of producing a fresh and unique product for the anniversary year.
Without further ado, here are some of the most contentious rumours that have been stirring excitement and disbelief amongst Apple fans and critics alike!
Security & Unlocking
There was a point in 2013 where we went crazy over the fingerprint-sensor feature, aptly named Touch ID, which came with the iPhone 5s and it has become an important function in many devices today.
However, it has been said that this new iPhone 8 might actually do away with this popular form of security. Shocking, we know, but apparently the iPhone 8 might incorporate a more high-tech feature such as facial recognition or eye-scanning instead.
That’s so high-tech, even Samsung hasn’t used that. Or have they? Oh, they have.
So we just have to wait for a fancy name tagged with a fancy adjective for facial recognition.
Home button
The minimalist iPhone home button is perhaps the one of the most recognizable features of the product. Back when they removed the tiny square on it during the iPhone 5s release, it already seemed like a really big change.
This time, the iPhone 8 might possibly not even have a home button at all, in favour of incorporating a digital home button into the device instead. Seems like Apple really plans to revamp the image of its phones.

Larger, high-tech display
Although sizes have changed, the look of the iPhone display screen has remained largely standard over the years. However, the iPhone 8 is rumoured to have an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display that will stretch across the screen and even curve down the edges.
While this means better-quality graphics, it might make the aesthetic of the phone look a little odd, especially when we’re used to the current range.
I mean, no one has done that before, right? Oh, wait. Did something say “Samsung”?
Let’s wait for a fancy name for the edge again.
New form of Naming
To be honest, it might not even follow the traditional naming system. Rumoured names for the new model include iPhone Edition, iPhone Pro, and iPhone X. Seeing as this is the big 10th anniversary, it is not totally unlikely that they would go for a new form of naming.
However, it might seem a little out of place in the range that they’ve worked hard to build over the past decade. Well, I guess we shall have to wait and see!
Expensive freebies
Another exciting part of getting a new phone is all the stuff that comes with it in the box. And turns out that there is a chance that the iPhone 8 might actually be bundled with a free pair of AirPods!
You know, the earphones that don’t have wires (with a fancy name).
However, this has been shot down by many who believe that the AirPods are simply too expensive to be included without raising the price of the phone drastically. Well, we shall see if Apple decides to pull a generous move.
Overall, the iPhone 8 is estimated to cost as much as $1,200, the most expensive model as of yet, and is likely to be released in the first or second week of September.
